While I love my MIII V2, I always have the " I need a better amp" GAS going on, So is the X2 cab and head better? Or which other amp would you suggest for use with set of TV Jones Classics on a Gretsch? Thanks!

"Better" is somewhat of a relative term in that it applies specifically to some need YOU have that can't be addressed by the MIII, but could be addressed by the IV or V. The only situations I could think of would be a need for using stereo effects or greater volumes. Obviously that relates only to live performances, and only to live performances in which your amp isn't sent through the PA. Additional volume isn't relavant in that situation since you only need enough volume to mix well on stage with the rest of the band. Stereo isn't relevant in that situation since most sound engineers don't use stereo panning since only the audience in the center would get the benefit whereas those on the sides wouldn't get a clean mix.

I have a IV and our rhythm guitar player has a III. Because we always go through the PA I don't think I'd be missing anything if I were to have to use a III for any reason, and we've played a wide range of venues both indoor and outdoor up to 2,000 people.

As far as your guitar setup is concerned, I can't imagine with all the great models available on the Mustang that you can't find something that complements your Gretch. Myself, I've always loved the sound of a Gretsch on a Twin or a Deluxe. But I will tell you this, which is something I tell a lot of young people I play with when they get the itch to buy new gear. There are no toys you can buy that will make you a better musician. Only practice will do that.

I assume you mean the Super Champ X2 rather than a different Mustang model? (Just clarifying as I think the previous reply was talking more about the other Mustang models).

The Mustang amps combine solid-state analogue amplifiers with digital modelling. They re-create the sound of other well-known amplifiers and guitar effects. The consensus is they do this very well; some people insist a "real" valve/tube amp will always sound better; the majority these days agree modelling amps sound just as good, and that the Fender Mustang range in particular is amongst the best currently available.

The Super Champ X2 is a (partial?) valve/tube amp with some digital processing in the pre-amp stages to model other amplifiers and guitar effects. Its advantage over the Mustang amps is that it is a "real" valve/tube amp, if that matters to you. Its disadvantage is that it doesn't give you such a wide range of effects or control over them, compared in particular to the Mustang 3/4/5.

Which one is "better" for you will depend on what sound you want to create, and how your ears perceive the output of each amplifier. I can only suggest you go to a store and try the Super Champ X2.

I did exactly that, and auditioned the X2 alongside the Mustang. I chose the Mustang for a reason I had not anticipated. I found the cab/speaker in the X2 too "boxy" sounding; the Mustang had a much warmer, larger, "open" sound that appealed more to me and my playing style. For others, the Champ sound may be better - in particular I'm sure I'm not a good enough guitarist to get the best from the X2. When I hear professional guitarists using them, it sounds completely different from when I tried it! Just a personal viewpoint that is hopefully helpful to you.

What is your amp not doing that you need to do? I love my MIII V2. When I hear better the first thing that comes to my mind is a better build. I wish the jacks were heavier duty. They feel "cheap." I haven't broken anything but I fear I will with a slight bump. The cabnet seams fine but I wish it had reinforced corners.

What does "Better" mean to you?

The sound, features and function of the amp is great to me.

I am gigging guitarist. I care about my sound, I care about sound that my audience hears. I take the M III out to the majority of gigs I play. Nuff said....
