Hey everybody, I have a question that I've found zero information on so far, and I'm hoping that maybe I can get an answer here.

I recently traded my HRD for the Mustang IV (v.1). It's been a very happy transition, and I think this amp is going to be with me for many, many years to come. It has come to my attention, however, that there doesn't seem to be an update that brings any of the v.2 features to the v.1. I understand that this is likely a business tactic to get people to buy the newer models. However, I find it unreasonable to consider the task of bringing the newer amp models and effects onto the older amps impossible. Whether through a user-made patch or some nifty tweaking of the amp settings, I think that it would be nice to have those extra goodies that the newer models have. Is there anything out there like that at the moment?

This forum is full of info on this subject. Many topics/posts discuss it at length. However it is unfortunate that the forum search won't let you search for useful keywords like "v1" which may be why they're hard to find.

Correct, the V1 amps do not have V2 features. Incorrect, it's not a business tactic. It's simply because the hardware and DSP of the V2 amps are different and the new features either require the different hardware, and/or it's not economically viable for Fender to re-implement V2 features for the DSP of the V1 amps. It's not that Fender are artificially preventing an update of the V1 amps to V2.

See above.

Personally, there are so many amp models and effects on the V1 amps (I too have a V1 Mustang IV) that I can get every sound I want. I don't doubt the additional V2 amp models and effects are good and useful, but I don't see that they are essential.

Let's approach your question from a different angle: what V2 feature (amp model, effect, hardware) do you specifically need, that isn't on your V1 amp? Quite often, someone can suggest a perfectly good alternative. Let's deal with the actual things you want to do and solve that, rather than trying to solve the entire general question (turn a V1 amp into a V2 amp), which can't be done.

Though I've never pulled my mustang apart, so I don't know for sure, it may be that turning a V1 into a v2 is nothing more than replacing the control module.

Of course there may be a million reasons why it wouldn't be that simple or would not work.

If it is possible Fender should offer it as an upgrade for a fee of about %50 of the cost of a new amp would work both for Fender and Mustang v1 owners.

The 60's Thrift and '57 Twin models were things that I was particularly interested in, as well as the Big Fuzz and the Black Box effects. The others were nice, but not necessary for what I'm intending to play.

OK, I still feel we're asking the wrong question. If the question is "I see the V2 amps have a 57 Twin model and that's what I want" then the only answer is to buy a V2 amp.

But if we can approach it differently, we may be able to propose an answer that doesn't require you to buy anything. Let's assume your goal is to achieve a certain sound, rather than to own some piece of equipment. So, what is it about the sound of the '57 Twin (that you've heard either on a V2 Mustang or because you already own a real 57 Twin, etc) that you particularly want to recreate? Very specifically, what is different about the sound you want to create, compared to any sound you can get from your existing Mustang (eg the '65 Twin model etc).

It is quite likely someone can suggest settings for your existing amp that will get you close enough to the sound you want, using the V1 models and effects. There is enough variety on the V1 amps that I'm pretty confident that should be possible, if your goal is to obtain a certain sound, and thus solve your problem.

On the other hand, if your goal is to have an amp model called "57 Twin" (etc) whatever it sounds like, then as above your only recourse is to buy a V2 amp.

look for an old post of mine where I provided V2-like amp-emulation presets for v1 amps

If you have a v1 and you are just missing some effects, I would keep the V1 and buy a zoom MS50G (100$), which has more and better effects than the mustang line (but the mustang amps have better amp emulations IMO)
http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/ms-50g

unless Fender comes up with something new I would probably get one of those myself to complement my M3v2
