Tired of presonus firebox failing to load properly half the time.
Sometimes need to reboot or go into sound settings and rechoosemfirebox as the default device.

Running win 7. Going to look for new drivers today but firebox model is discontinued and I doubt anything new as far as drivers will help.

Anyway, my question is what are good options for around $200?

Looking to record a couple of guitars and mikes.

Thanks

Steve

At $200, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is not a bad way to go.

For $200 you can buy a decent starter Digital multitrack recorder.

I tried using my PC for recording and got nothing but frustration by latency.

So I found a good deal on a used Fostex MR16 and haven't looked back.

Examples. The top 4 songs were recorded with the Fostex.
It produces a more clean recording then I can put into it lol.
The noise you hear is from the outboard equipment. The Fostex produces a recording with no hum, hiss or anything.
And, most importantly, NO LATENCY. It's also REAL easy to multitrack. Punch in,out.
On my model I can record 4 signals at once.

I don't understand the attraction with recording on PC.
Maybe I'm missing something. I guess... you can arrange them easier on a PC.
But, even with the Fostex, you can actually import each individual track into the PC and then arrange them then.

Spent the time to delete all unneeded sound devices that keep loading. Down to just the firebox as a sound device and now have everything working.
Took restoring to a previous restore point, multiple trys...

Recording with sonar software.

I"ll see if this is stable and try and ride this setup for a bit..

Will consider a stand alone 4track recorder though.
Don't have latency problems with this setup but computer conflicts do cause pain with these setups.

Thanks

Steve

What are people's thoughts on the 8-track Tascam DP-008EX? (http://tascam.com/product/dp-008ex/)

I am looking for something like this and this model keeps coming up and for only $149 it seems a steal.

I don't like laptops and like the idea of something portable. Also, as mentioned above, I'm not sold on computer-everything. Seems I could export tracks for computer processing if I want to.

Thanks for comments!

It's kind of like comparing a bicycle to a mercedes. It's really not so much about the PC as it is the recording studio software and the flexibility it provides. The ability to add virtual drum sets, automatically generate drum tracks, virtual guitar amps and effects, access to a variety of MIDI instruments for keyboards or stringed instruments, not to mention unlimited numbers of tracks, and professional effects and so forth. The standalone recorders do a pretty decent job of capturing tracks, but they come with pretty significant limits and you really can't add features to them like you can PC studio software.

I guess my thought was not to exclude using a computer, but getting a standalone for portability. I prefer full sized computers over laptops. A digitial recorder can be fun and useful even if not *everything*. Nabraska was recorded entirely on a crappy 4-track... then mastered as good as possible to fix the mistakes they made!

Yeah, the PC is the cranky rattling bicycle and the standalone recorder is the sleek sports Merc

I have a Zoom R24 for simultaneous 8 track. Plug it in, switch on and you're recording.
I transfer the WAV tracks from the SD card to my PC for editing in the DAW.
Best of both worlds!

(I also have a painful EMU1820m interface - ok it's very old, but there's no comparison)
