Hello all, I have a Mustang III v2. I just purchased the MS4 footswitch and the EXP-1 expression pedal this week. The MS4 works great, but the exp. pedal doesn't. I have gone through the calibration process in the v2 advanced owners manual multiple times, I have changed the expression pedal settings several times both using the amp, and the Fuse software. I have updated my amp to the latest v2.2 fimware, but it still doesn't work. The green and red lights on the pedal work, and will change from red to green by clicking the pedal, but there is otherwise no response from the pedal. I cannot get it to control volume, or any other function. Does it sound like I have a bad pedal? Thanks for your help or any tips you can give to help me get it going!

Just to double check on a few things you didn't mention in your post. Make sure you are plugging the cord into the correct side of the EXP-1 and into the 4 button on the back of the amp.

If all that's good, you might have got a bad pedal.

I have a cable plugged into the jack on the right side of the pedal labled "To Mustang Amp" going to the "4 Button Footswitch" jack on the back of the amp. I have a cable going from the jack on the left side of the pedal labled "O MS4 Footswitch" going to the SM4 footswitch. I have the 2 button footswith connected to the "2 Button Footswitch" jack on the back of the amp.

Sounds like a defective pedal. My four button went bad after the first two weeks. It took around two weeks, but Fender sent me a new one.

Oh yeah, try one more thing. It could be the cable they sent. any cable will work, try a guitar cable in the pedal.

Other things to check:

The EXP-1 settings are per-preset. Are you sure you have saved the pedal settings to the preset, and are you sure you have that preset selected when testing it? (If you want to use the EXP-1 on multiple presets, you have to configure and save it in every preset).

Try using just the EXP-1 without the MS-4 connected and see if that changes anything.

Assuming both the above make no difference: what, exactly, are the EXP-1 settings you are saving in FUSE? In particular, what parameter are you setting the pedal to control, and what values are you setting for the heel and toe positions? Can you post a screenshot of the entire "CTRL-E" pedal settings window?

Further, is this a completely fresh install of FUSE, or have you ever had an older version of FUSE on the same computer (even if you completely de-installed it prior to installing a new version). If you have ever had an older version of FUSE on the same computer, you can get 'odd' behaviour from the EXP-1 settings (see Fender's replies to this topic: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=95910)

scott-uk, This is a fresh install of Fuse version 2.7.1.48 with no previous installs. After reading the other thread you posted, I think I will try installing FUSE on a laptop and see if it makes a difference.

However, I would think that the pedal should work regardless of what is going on with my PC or FUSE considering that the factory presets in the amp have expression pedal settings already saved. For example, preset 19, "angry rodent" has the exp-1 set up to control volume in volume mode, and gain in expression mode. I would think that with a simple calibration, the pedal should work as intended using the configuration found in this preset. But, here is what happens...

When I turn the knob and select preset 19, the pedal lights green. Nothing happens to the volume when I roll the pedal back and forth. The only response I get from the pedal is when I click the light to red... the gain knob on the screen immediately turns to whatever position "toe position" is set at. To clarify this, if I change "toe setting" to 50 percent, when I click the pedal from green to red, the gain knob will jump to half way. If I set "toe position to 75 percent and click the pedal from green to red, the gain knob will jump to 3/4 of the way. This is the only response I get from the pedal. I am beginning to think that mechanically, nothing is happening inside the pedal as I move it with my foot, other than the clicking of the button.

I have tried the EXP-1 both with and without the MS-4 connected. The MS-4 works fine looped through the EXP-1.

Thanks for the help so far... do I still need to post a pic of the settings?

Sounds like you have things set up ok if FUSE and the amp are recognising your 'toe position' settings. For completeness, what are your 'heel position' settings?

Going back to the pedal calibration - can we double-check you've done this exactly right? The original instructions Fender provided were wrong, and the updated instructions can still be slightly misleading. See my second reply to this topic: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=94304 in which I clarified how to do the calibration. If you don't do it exactly this way, the pedal won't work properly (or at all). I'll repeat here for convenience:

The updated Fender instructions for pedal calibration are:
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... ion-pedal/

Halfway down that page it says this:

The EXP-1 expression pedal calibration procedure is as follows:

-Press and hold UTIL while powering on, UTIL LED should light up for 1 second.
-Move the expression pedal between the desired heel and toe endpoints to set the range.
-Turn the encoder knob to the next Preset to complete the process.

To clarify a point that isn't explicit enough in the second step of the above instructions: you must first move the pedal, in one smooth movement, to the desired heel position; then, in one smooth movement, move it to the desired toe position. Do this just once: don't waggle the pedal backwards and forwards, don't move it to the toe position before the heel position, etc.

If this doesn't help, then yes it does sound as though you have a faulty pedal.

I thought I would follow up on this... I had the expression pedal replaced and now it works just fine. I had a bad pedal. Thanks for the help. :D
