I'm going to be getting one of these pedals for Christmas but I haven't tried one out yet. It is my understanding from reading posts on here that when used in strictly "volume mode" that it is not necessarily linked to ANY of the volume (amp, master etc.) controls and kind of functions on its own.

My question is, does it work proportionally to the Master volume? i.e. will it's range (loudness) be limited by the current setting of the Master volume? For example, if I have the Master volume set at 5 will the pedal exceed that volume if I max it out?

I am hoping that is not the case. I would like the pedal to function within the Maximum setting I have on the Master volume...

Thanks!

My question is, does it work proportionally to the Master volume? Yes it does. Whatever your master is set at is the loudest the pedal will go.

Further to teljax's reply:

The EXP-1 in volume mode adds an additional volume control in the signal chain, after the amp model and before any post-effects. (edit) Note the EXP-1's volume mode settings are 'global' across all presets - unlike the EXP-1's expression mode settings which are specific to each preset.

If you don't have the EXP-1, this (conceptual) volume control is always set to maximum (as determined by the preset volume, the master volume, etc). So the EXP-1 lets you go from zero to that maximum, but won't override the maximum already established from the other controls.

Note the control's position before any post-effects is important to prevent it cutting-off delay and reverb tails, etc. If you want a pedal-controlled volume elsewhere in the signal chain, you can do this by putting the pedal into 'expression' mode and assigning it to control the 'level' (or similar) parameter of one of the other effects in the chain.
