Sat I used my headphones to play. I normally don't do this, as the cord annoys me, but it was late and I had a new guitar I just HAD to play.

The odd thing is, EVERYTHING was a lot gainier than usual... Is this normal when using phones with these amps? ** The cleans were still clean, it was only stuff that was at or near overdrive territory that got kicked up a notch or two** Who knows, perhaps my pickups are simply on the hot side?

For instance, I was trying to emulate the Liquid Solo preset I foolishly didn't back up. No matter what I did, the 90's Metal amp sounded all crunchy and distorty- and not really in a good way-even with the gain turned almost off. I even fussed with the bias and sag, and while it improved things, it was still sounding all raunchy.

It sounded nothing like the MIII V2 I used in the shop earlier that day. Is there really that big a difference between the two versions and headphones vs speaker? To be fair, the amp in the store was in a hutch, so it was acting more like a closed back cab ( shelf above and below, dividers on either side. amp maybe 2" off the back wall.). I've noticed this difference before- lots more bass etc- but not a lot LESS gain?...

I also realize this was my first go on my amp with this guitar- an Epi WildKat with dual P90's. I've never had much luck modifying 90's metal to my taste- I wish I'd saved that freakin Liquid Solo preset somewhere else (like instead of that ugly What the %^&$ preset for example) before I put my own in that slot... I'd like to see how they made it sound that good!

On the plus side, I WAS able to replicate the awesome delays I was getting in the store with an AquaPuss, via my Carbon Copy. Im' not too surprised by that as both pedals are Dunlop products.

Isn't Liquid Solo one of the standard presets? You can do a factory reset and restore them.

I have a Mustang 1 v1. My headphones sound different than the speaker, but not in the way you describe. I would expect different headphones would effect the tone, and maybe be over-driven sooner.

You sure it's not the hotter P90s causing it?
Maybe roll off the guitar volume a bit?
I don't do headphones and guitar much, but I do record out of the USB and that can be a good bit grainier than the speaker.

Bugger...

My reply disappeared.

Anyhow, I partially answered my own question. Had the opportunity to play it loud and proud today. There is definitely a difference between the speaker and the phones. Less distortion when playing it au naturale.

Of course, if I had turned off my stinkin distortion pedal... (it sits up top, and the footswitch hides the on/off LED when I'm sitting in front.)

I also got the Basic 90's metal to sound much better:

* guitar: Epiphone WildKat. (semi hollow w/P90's)

Turned gain down to 1.5
Turned volume down to around 8
Turned Mids UP to appx 6
Switched speaker cab emulation from 4x12V to 2x12C. (4x12G also sound great!)

That's IT! Completely tamed that beast. No more wild howling feedback as soon as it's pulled up, noise greatly reduced, and best of all: No more nasty buzz saw/ chainsaw distortion! Instead, I get a REALLY nice rock crunch. Hot and cleanish with high strings, low and growly on the biggun's. Fender had both the gain and the volume dimed on that preset, so you got feedback if there was the slightest movement of any string on the guitar when you called it up. Also magnified the single coil hum-big time.

So, for all of you Mustang newbies: Don't give up- you WILL find good tones in there!!

To answer the folks who responded so far:

The same guitar was used on both the V1 and V2 amps, so that wasn't the problem. I'm normally using an LP ('buckers) ; and SG (P90's); or a Firebird with this amp, so I don't think these pickups are the problem.

I think it was the combo of headphones, and a distortion pedal that was left on. I use this pedal to add a "cranked amp" vibe, but not a lot of extra distortion- probably why I didn't notice. ( gain knob on the pedal- a '78 Distortion- is turned down to about 10:00,as is the level. The crunch switch is engaged) I almost never use phones when I play- I hate the way the cord gets in the way all the time!

I didn't try the volume knob roll-off trick. To be honest, I never thought of it... I did, however, vary my picking dynamics, and that DID make a difference. It's pretty cool how well this amp responds to little things like that!
