stratele52, is that because it is solid state? Remem reading I guess in the older days you couldn't leave the amp on without the guitar pluged in? That is great. Thanks..

It was a while ago. Said something about burning out the power supply. Good to know I can use the mp3 player with out the guitar plug in. Amazing how great it sounds for listening to music as well. Thanks

I should say , guitar amp are made to add color to sound , amp is a almost a kind of musical instrument . It could add some good tone to your MP .

Hi Fi amp is neutral

mistydoo, I think the "caution" you heard about some time back was related to tube amps. If you turn on a tube am without a speaker plugged in and then make the slightest strum on your guitar, you can damage the power tube and output transformer sections of the amp...something like that.

Solid state amps are a blessing to us! You can use the Mustang V which is an amp "head" without speakers plugged in. Just run a guitar cable from the preamp out into a tube amp and use the Mustang V (or III or IV for that matter) as an effects processor. Point being that you cannot damage a solid state amp if it does not have a speaker plugged in.

And you asked, "Question is Do I have to have the guitar chord pluged in as well when using just the MP3 player?"
You won't hurt a thing using the amp the way you are using it.

actually you should not run any amp,, tube, or solid sate, with out something connected to the speaker out.

it's like putting a cork in a garden hose, and turning the water on full bore.

the hose will break eventually

so wont the amp..

That's not really a good analogy. A solid state amplifier will not be harmed in any way by not having a load on its output (speakers or headphones). The output transistors are actually under less stress with no speaker load, as there's no current flowing through them.

Interesting and important discussion though this is, it's possibly confusing the original question, which was about running the amp using its aux-in with nothing connected to the guitar input. The amplifier outputs (on a Mustang combo) are always connected to the speaker*, so questions of running an amp without an output load are moot.

Back to the OP's question: yes it is perfectly safe to run your Mustang without a guitar connected to the guitar input, using it just to amplify your MP3 player via the AUX socket.

*Well, unless you deliberately sabotage the amp...

The only thing I can think of is that maybe an open circuit on the input could result in annoying low-level noise (eg. 60 Hz hum) being amplified to audible levels.
Then again, for that to happen, you probably have to have a cord plug in to the amp but nothing at the other end. The input jacks must be self-terminating, right?

Nitpick:
A chord would be something like Emajor, or Aminor7.
A cord would be the insulated wire cable with plugs at either end.
