I have a Mustang II amp. Recently, if I put the master volume above 3, it starts to sound distorted. And, if I put the volume higher and the guitar volume up, but I'm not playing, the amp makes a shrieking sound. Is there anything I can do the fix this? Please let me know if I can give any more information.

Dear ltm399,

Thanks for your inquiry. I would suggest disabling all effects and auditioning various Amp models until you locate one that has minimal break-up or distortion. Once an Amp model is chosen, lower the Gain and increase the Volume on the Amp and roll back the Volume on your guitar. If the sound is what you desire then raise the Master Volume.
I hope this helps and please let us know if we can assist you further.

Thank you for your reply! I followed your suggestion, and the amp works fine on a more clean setting; all the excess buzzing stopped immediately. But the amp tone I'm going for is a heavy metal tone, so I do expect some distorted sound of course, but there's lots of excess buzzing, even with my guitar volume off and the noise gate on full. Also, I forgot to mention in my original post that I have updated to the latest firmware. Is there a way I to fix the problem while maintaining a heavy tone?

Hi ltm399,

You will want to try to narrow down the source of the 'buzzing'. I would suggest starting with the guitar disconnected from the amp. Listen for noise as you select different Presets. Then, if you are hearing buzzing/noise on one Preset or another, note which Presets these are. Next, connect the guitar. Note whether the noise increases. You may also want to note whether the Presets that are noisier have Stomp effects such as distortion, overdrive or compression as these effects can tend to enhance apparent noise levels.

Some degree of noise is expected when using high gain amp models/Presets. So, it would likely be a matter of determining if the level of noise you are hearing is within a 'normal' range or not. Please check these items out. And let us know how it goes. Thanks.

Best Regards,

Alan

I went through my various presets and all of them except my clean presets had some type of loud buzzing (some louder than others however.) Is this normal for metal amp settings, or do you think I need a repair?

buzzing ... Is this normal for metal amp settings

The Mustang is modelling (ie mimicking) various real amps. Those real amps are usually quite rudimentary circuits with little noise protection. Indeed, the high-gain nature of 'metal' amps in particular tends to increase the inherent electrical noise.

Rightly or wrongly, the Mustang tries to faithfully recreate the full behaviour of the amp being modelled, including its noise characteristics.

So, if your amp has no noise on clean settings, but does have background noise on some of the higher-gain settings, that is probably normal behaviour. There's certainly no hardware problem with your amp (ie nothing that requires a repair) if the noise level depends on your preset settings (rather than being present all the time).

Hi ltm399,

Firstly, thanks once again to scott-uk for your valuable and thoughtful assistance to Forum members. And ltm399, from what you are describing so far, it does not sound like the amp is malfunctioning. But if you do have additional concerns regarding the performance of the amp, please feel free to contact us directly as well for further assistance.

Best Regards,

Alan

Try using the noise gate function, see if that changes or eliminates the buzzing. I've found that some presets- ESPECIALLY the "metal" type ones are pretty noisy. Fiddling with the noise gate, and/or lowering the channel volume and gain helps with this.

Also, single coils, like P90's hum like mo-fo's when using the high gain models.

I've also found, at least for me, that metal tones can be a bit harder to dial in. Fendery, and rock/blues/country etc stuff is basically effortless. The 90's Metal, and Metal 2000 models feel more like wild untamed beasts to me! I believe the real problem is me, though. I just haven't put forth much effort in that direction.

I have a post elsewhere on this forum where I show how I got the Basic 90's Stack to stop howling at me, and tamed the background noise. The guitar I was using has P90's, so it was kind of a perfect storm noise-wise, lol. IIRC, all I did was lower the volume and gain, add a touch more mids, and swap out the default 4x12V for the 2x12C cab. I was actually trying to re-create the Liquid Solo preset, without much luck. The result I DID get was more crunch and less metal, but the idea was the same. (lose the %&($ing noise!) I saved it as my go to crunchy Rawk sound.

For the sake of full disclosure, My amp is an, MIII- version 1, and I used the on amp controls only. You'll need Fuse to swap cabs.
