Hey folks... I'm looking to get some input from you guys who use a lot of High Gain sounds 8) Particularly in a live playing volume/situation

-Which models do you feel are the best?
-What settings do you dial in for tight rhythm and stand out lead tone?
-Which dirt pedals (in the amp already) do you feel gives the best boost and do you place it before or after the head
-Which cab emulations do you use?
-Which bias do you feel works best (Matched... Sag etc...) on the high gain amp head model(s) you dig most?

Thanks!

Could you mention which type of real amps your interested in so that folks can equate that to the models offered on the Stang.

I asked a similar question about the British 80s - which of course is a JCM 800. Check out the topic lower down this page

Basically the 90's Metal, Super Sonic and the Metal 2000. Those are the one's I have in my MII V1. Far as I'm aware those are pretty much a Mesa Rectifier (Metal 90's) and a 5150 (Metal 2000). Perhaps I'm mixed with those  I'm more experienced with "Old School" amps.

I've been working with the Metal 2000 head a little more than the 90's... getting some decent sounds but.. Looking for some fave settings that cut it at stage volumes from folks who dwell in "High Gain Territory" often. I'm using an HSH with hot wound PAF's... Very LP-ish... GREAT for Gain 8)

Patches at bedroom volume levels don't sound the same at live levels. Even if you can get your amp cranked at home the space afforded in a live setting also changes the sound considerably even if the levels are the same. Scooping the mids too much rarely works in a band situation boosting the mids and treble allows the tone to cut better. Be prepared to add more when playing live.

Try your luck downloading some of the online shared patches - however it can be a long road - many don't have a decent description or seem to be built for bedroom or home recording.

Can I finally add look at the Ranger Stomp Pedal, I nearly overlooked this until someone mentioned how good it was adding mid range to the tone - worth a try.

Agreed... opening up the amp is necessary when tweaking gain settings. Also, yes... scooped is never going to cut in on a stage... in the living room... sure... but live... no way. Unfortunately... there's no ranger stomp in the M1's... I think that would be super helpful to warm up the tones and get a smoother/warmer gain... but can't go there.

The most daunting issue I've experienced thus far... the high gain models seem to have a bit of harshness... kind of a grainy-ness about them. If I cut the treble... push the mids and the bass that does help... I'm also going to try messing a bit with chorus... to assist in smoothing out that grainy/harsh thing with the higher gain.

I've also been giving some of the other cab emulations another try... but I keep finding myself coming back to the 4x12G... for whatever reason... that one has mid push more than the others... I've also noticed that the 2x12 cab has a lot of possibilities... it's tighter than the 4x12.... but seems somewhat boomy.... have to spend more time and see what shakes there on the 2x12.

Well... finding the best way to deal with the harshness issue... treat these high gain models like a pexi

Here's a decent setting for humbuckers that'll rock hard at stage volumes:
American 90's Head
Gain - 6.6
Treble 3.1
Mid 7.9
Bass - 8.1
Small Hall Verb - 1.1
Matched Tubes
Bias 0%
Cabinet - 4X12G
Presence - 6.0

Enjoy 8)
