I went to the Fender Fuse website and logged in. Then went to the "download presets" page and typed into the search window the word "surf" and I got about 50 presets:

https://fuse.fender.com/mustang/presets ... e&limit=50

You're bound to find something in that list. Good luck :)

Get to the BASIC TWIN preset, and dime the reverb! I think that will do it!

I was trying to get a good "drip" for palm muting, like in the opening of "Baja" by The Astronauts.

On page 3 of this surfguitar101.com thread - http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/14228/?page=3 - forum user Wombat confirmed my suspicions that I need a bit of delay in it. One of the Tape Delays with a delay time between 1 and 2 (125-250 ms) seems to be getting close.
Back to the drawing board.

In any given room setting or live gig setting, your 'Reverb' settings can vary...I don't think you want it to sound shrill in the mix with other instruments being played. Experimentation is your best friend here :)) Add delay...and again, experimenting with the different parameters that are offered, will also help. Use the 'Tap' feature button for best results when setting it for the correct tempo of the tune you are playing.

I went for a 'Not over the top' surf tone for this Beach Boys tune from the late 70s. Using both pickups together on my Jazzmaster and my Mustang 4 amp with the 59 Bassman as my amp model of choice :)) Lead break starts @ 1:16 into clip.

That's a great sound musicmatty, and, like you say, not "over the top" surfy. Rhythm and lead were both good.
Have you uploaded the preset?

I uploaded several presets a few years back under musicmatty on fuse. However, I never did upload this preset as I had to craft it in short order to work on an audio demo project that I was involved in at that time. I have other surf type videos recorded on YouTube using my tube amps and my zoom multi effects pedal if you visit my YouTube page.

Thanks -
