I have a Mustang IV amp that I bought new last year. I keep getting a 60 Hz hum through it constantly. As soon as I plug my Casino in, or the computer in the Aux jack it hums. I am plugged straight into the wall. It is about to drive me nuts!! Actually its not a drive to get me to nuts, it's more of a gimme putt. I use the amp in a 12X10 room. TIA for any hints, help, or suggestions to resolve this issue.

I posted this here after a friendly suggestion from another member after I had posted this in the education forum.

Certain things in a room such as electrical outlets and lighting can add to the hum of the amp especially with single coil guitars. Some days it can be more of an issue than others but are you aware that the amp comes with a noise gate feature? Press down on the amp button till the 2nd or 3rd page opens up..you will then see the noise gate parameter and adjust it accordingly. The noise gate allows the amp to sit quietly while the guitar is not being played.. the higher you set the parameter the quicker the gate will activate once you stop playing.. Be careful not to set it to too high or the guitar will not sound sometimes unless you play it at very high volumes.

Aside from this ..the amp comes with a 5 year warranty.. if you feel it is defective and not working properly.. you can return it for an exchange.

Guitars and the cable from guitar to amp will pick up electrical interference from the mains, and transmit this to the amp. Single coil guitars do this more than double-coil (this is exactly the reason double-coil "humbucker" pickups were invented and named).

To minimise this, try and move the guitar and cables as far from any mains electrical wiring as possible and/or shield the guitar and its cables from any mains cables. Use the shortest instrument cable you can.

Also, you can get something called "ground loops" when multiple pieces of equipment are all connected to the mains, and to each other. This could be happening when you connect your computer to the amp. If you have a laptop, try running it on its batteries rather than mains power when connecting it to the amp. Also, if appropriate, supported and safe for your equipment and country, you could use an unearthed mains lead for the computer. Only do this if the computer documentation says this type of lead is ok.

Another way to troubleshoot the problem:
1) Unplug everything from the amp. Is the 60 hz hum present? If yes, return it for service or replacement.
2) Connect guitar only. 60 Hz= yes? Try different cable=still there? Could be something in the room i.e. flourescent lighting or a motor driven something like a fan or computer running. Turn things off to see if the hum disappears. Or it could be single-coil pickups (don't know what kind the Casino has). If it's the pickups, then you'll need to adjust the noise gate.
3) If at step 2 there is no hum, then connect the computer and follow suggestions of the guys above.

Good luck

Lynn, the Casino has a Alinco P-90 pickups. Thanks for the help.

As you folks may have gathered I am very new at guitar. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I am getting the hum when I plug the computer or guitar in. In this room there are one desk top computer, two printers, one paper shredder, plus the incandescent light on the ceiling fan. Plenty of sources for electrical interference. I adjusted the noise gate to super and that eliminated the hum. The lower setting still gave some hum.

I have much to learn about using this amp, and learn how to play the guitar. I work 70-90 hours per week so I don't have a lot of sit and study the manual time after I try and squeeze in practice time. Trying to build up to an hour a day.

Thank you for all the helpful replies. I shall return with even more questions shortly.

P-90's hum, it's the trade off we make for that P-90 tone. If you back off the volume on the guitar, a lot of that buzz will go away.
