do as the Foo Fighters do: load the basic american 90 preset, lower the mids a bit and rock on

What effects would you recommend to add on. Slightly of topic but I'm interested in buying a Spark boost pedal to boost my solos is there an effect on my mustang similar?

the pedal you are talking about is sold as a "clean boost with gain for added grit and dirt", essentially what generations of guitarist have used the Tubescreamer for.
Unfortunately a clean boost will not work with an modelling amp the same way it would with a tube amp (if you add 26dB of gain on the input it will sound like screeching glass)
Instead try the following: add a greenbox effect in front of the american 90 model, roll back the gain to almost minimum, and play with the effect level until it sounds and you like. You will accomplish pretty much the same and will save the 100$ that the pedal costs. Donations are welcomed!

Yup. Try also the ranger, overdrive, blackbox and orange box. Pick the one that goes better with your pickups and ears, no exact science here.

solo = mids

try the ranger effect (nothing more middy than this effect). try different levels and gain

you can also try the same combination, but in front of a metal 2000 amp emulation

Ok thanks ill try the ranger and tube screamer and report back. Can you edit pedals and effect without using fuse.

Depends on which Mustang you have. MIII, IV, and V; YES!!, MI or MII, no... With the big Mustangs, you can edit just about everything on the amp! They were designed for live use, where a computer hook up isn't always convenient, or advisable. ( I get an extreme case of pucker just thinking about having my laptop or a tablet at a bar gig!)

Also, FWIW, Dave Grohl uses a Hi-Watt head and cabs, live and Chris Shifflett uses several amps, but mainly AC-30's live. Pat is the Mesa guy. You might want to try the Brit 60's model to get Chris's tones, and the Brit Watts for Dave's. Both play Gibson guitars with humbuckers: Chris a Les Paul, and Dave a 335.

I'll echo what was said above: shoving boatloads of extra voltage into the main input of a digital preamp- like the Mustang- isn't a good idea. It won't work like it would on a tube amp- no tubes to push. Instead, you'll either trip a limiter- put there to protect the computer from just such abuse, or you'll get nasty sounding digital clipping. You could also damage the amp.

To use a real dirt pedal with this amp, you need to do the opposite of the traditional method. Turn the level knob DOWN to match, and use the gain/dirt/distortion knob to add the pedal's dirt. You're basically adding flavor to your base tone. This, of course, only works if you like the distortion flavor a particular pedal has. I use a FullTone OCD with mine, and love it. This pedal has every bit as much boost as your Spark booster, but also a TON of it's own distortion, if you want it. Really, it's a preamp in a box. This sort of distortion simply stacks with what you get from the amp. You can even use 1 pedal to push a second, as long as the second pedals level control is pulled back.

Ok thanks I've got the Chris Shifflet Tele and I'm using a mustang 3 I need something to push through my solos ill try the ranger and the greenbox see what that does. At the moment I was using my ds1 pedal for a bit of extra noise but didn't sound quite right.

Hi. I can't hrlp as far as making a Foo Fighters pereset specifically buy I have made a few tones myself, and am getting the hang of it. I've started a Mustang preset blogspot, in fact. So far I only have Maiden and Metallica on there but many many more are to come.

You can visit my blog (soley created for making my presets available to people) here:
http://themtones.blogspot.co.uk/. It's called "Fender Mustang Amp Presets"

Concerning the Spark booster pedal for solos and stuff, I would say you can get a good boost from even the Overdrive stomp on the mustang itself (although I bought a Boss Booster an a Digitec Main Squeeze compressor to get the Iron maiden tones for my own use).

If you download the "Piece of Mind" (By Iron maiden) preset from the previously mentioned blog, you will see how I simulated a booster pedal with just te overdrive stomp built into the amp already. I basically put the mids and treble very high. Laso, you will not get a good solo tone without enough Bass on the amp. Otherwise, it will sound dry and thin, with no substance. Hope this helps :D

Thanks for the reply's I tried the tube screamer and ranger effect and they still don't give me enough boost to be heard over the rest of the band.

For a general boost in volume for solos, I use a compressor after the amp model, and assign the stomp foot switch to that pedal. Lower the threshold so that compression is minimum and use the level control to the desired amount of boost.
