Hey guys,

I`m a beginner, so naturally i'm having a troubles to find just the right tone.

I own a mustang II, and a epiphone standard guitar the sound that i was trying to emulate was this one:

What i like about it is the crispness, you can clearly hear all the notes, and it sounds full and a little distorted at the same time.

any clues?

thanks!

My first impression from the recording is to start either with the British '60's (VOX AC 30) or with the '65 Deluxe Reverb. There's a certain amount of warmth to the tone and I think that's why I feel drawn to those two models. I'd start with the Bass around 3, Mid around 8, Treble around 6 and not a whole lot of gain. There's some slight breakup, but not a lot so I'd go easy on the gain until you find that point that sounds right.

Bear in mind, since you're a beginner, some of that tone you're hearing at the beginning of the song is due more to the fact the guitar player is palm muting the notes he's playing so the tone is more about technique than that actual amp sound. But the rest of the song is what I'm basing my impressions on.

I agree, this sounds a LOT like the british 60. I would add the Ranger effect in the front and lower amp gain, it can't be too far from there.

Indie-rock is f***ing perfect for the Mustang. I own a Bugera 333XL for metal and modern rock tones, it also have a very good crystal-clean channel ... but it sounds too clean, I have never been a fan of that.

I use the Mustang V for indie-rock, classic rock, punk-rock and for all cleans (I love the Bassman-ampmodell for that, it is very dynamic and can go from clean-dirty to almost-crunch-dirty if you play hard enough! :D ).

I prefer the fender modells for cleans, I havent used fender-amps before but I think I prefer the fendersound to the marshallsound actually. It sounds more open and have better string-separation.

I listen mostly to The Libertines, Babyshambles, The Pixies and Red Hot Chili Peppers (and a bunch of swedish bands that you guys probably don't know about ).

Btw: the strokes uses stratocaster with single-coil pickups, so if your humbuckers (I guess?) sounds too hot, try to lower the output a bit. I use a Hagström H II for indie-stuff (got myself Swedish vintage guitar from 1965. The pickups sounds like a mix between telecaster singlecoils and P90s)

Wow guys, i'm really impressed. the british'60's and ranger effect was spot on, now i fell like i'm getting somewhere with this amp! :)

thank you @dunedindragon and @jedi2b

The pickup input was helpfull too Hwasser, which leads me to one more question, and i'm gonna sound really newbie on this one, but do you guys have any tips on how a should handle the pick ups controllers on the guitar?

there are two controls, as far as i know one is for volume and the other is for tone, right?

for a lighter rock sound, like indie, where should i put those?

if it's not asking much, can you give me a general insight on what which pick up control is for?

thank you very much!

Hi

So it's not part of the Mustang III?

Mick

The ranger is part of the mustang III. It is a stomp box. In my notes I noted it is a model of "Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster"

I have no way of verifying that source effect so any fraternal correction is appreciated.

Peace.
