Hello there,
I just purchased an older Mustang III amp and I'm learning about it.
I mainly like the basic amp sounds with no mods.
The one thing that I would like to know is how do I change it so that all of my settings are at the same volume when selecting?
Some come through very quiet and some blast me out of the room.
I don't want to bother people upstairs.
I'm using a 4 button foot switch.
Thank you.

this is normal. driven and overdriven sounds are louder than clean sounds, is the nature of audio. fortunatelly you can correct for this factor with the mustangs

on this explanation "volume" means the second to the left knob, "master" means the last to right knob

try this:
-select the preset that you use that is the least loud (basic 65 twin is a good candidate)
-turn master to minimum
-turn volume to 10
-increase master until the loudest volume you want to hear (preferably at least 2.5, less than this, the mustang sounds like poop)
-now you got your baseline, dont touch master again. Save the baseline preset in place with volume 10

-now, for each one of the presets you like to equalize, switch to that preset, put volume at minimum, and start increasing volume until it sounds as loud as the baseline preset (will be between 3 and 8 depending on amp model, gain settings, eq, etc), save it and move to the next preset

done!

now you never need to touch the volume knob again. when moving to another room/gig/stadium, just increase/lower master to the loudest volume you want to hear in that venue.
If you need to adjust master to less than 2, my recommendation would be to use headphones at that point, or you will loose most of your tone.

FWIW... this is how I do it...
Method 1:
Use a db meter... turn the amp to a decent playing volume... adjust to the db meter and get everything within a 1-2 db of each other.
Method 2:
Adjust by ear... same as above only using your ears to hone it in within a db or two of each other

I do this at a playing out volume... however, I understand your situation is different in an apartment and we all know how pissing off the neighbors is NOT something we want to do.

One of the things that can be a little weird is that some amp models have a "Master Volume" in the amp model's 2nd menu... I generally set those all to 5.... and adjust parametrs within the amp's menu off of that.

Another thing... cab emulation... the 4x12 cab emulations are LOUDER that the combo amp emulations... I've found the all around best cab emulation for all of the amps is the 4x12G (celestion greenback). Get's everything in the same ballpark as each other in regards to volume... and it's a nice mid freindly cabinet sound.

Granted... I use my MIII live in band situations and found this to be the absolute best way to go... but even for living room volumes... it works really well. You still get the characteristics of the amp you choose... a Twin sounds like a Twin... a Marshall JCM 800 sounds like a Marshall JCM 800... A Vox AC30 sounds like a Vox AC30 and so on...

Rock On 8)
