i keep doubting my ears...how can an amp that cost me £229 here in the UK sound so damned good? I had it turned down too low yesterday and the doubts crept in again....then upped the volume a bit and it just sounded amazing.....anyone else experience this?

anyone else experience this?

Do you mean, just at like 2 a.m. and you don't want to wake the house up sort of low?

I do notice that the volume control does have a threshold where it doesn't really "come alive" tone wise,, till you get past that, but that's somwhere between 0 and 1

is that what you're referring to?

I love my III and IV, (hey, I'm not selling my tube amps.. but I love what these can do)

All amps sound different loud vs quiet. Like the post above shows, theres more at work here than the amp itself. But heres the thing....if you tweaked your presets to your liking at a louder volume, it's going to sound muddy/dark/lifeless down low. This is because where the volume was when you tweaked it there is a lot more brightness that you have to tweak out of the tone. Turn it below about 2 and all that brightness is gone. So if you tweaked a lot of brightness out of the preset at say 4 on the volume and it sounds perfect, that brightness will be needed if you turn it down to 2 and you will have to re-tweak the preset to sound alive down there. The opposite is also true. Tweak the tone with the volume at 2 and when you turn up to 4 it will be harsh and bright.

One fix is to take your favorite presets and save them to a higher bank then re-tweak those for a different volume level. This way you don't have to re-tweak them every time you go from loud to quiet. Another is use a EQ in the effects loop to roll down highs when you turn up or add some when you turn down. This is why i posted here a few months back that i wish fender would have put a single knob global tone control on the mustang right next to the global master.

I stopped playing out years ago so for me the mustang is relegated to home amp, so i tweak my presets at a low volume. If i were still gigging i would definately have a bank of stage volume presets.

this has been covered extensively before.
In a nutshell if you turn the volume TOO low (under 1.5-3 master volume depending on the preset other settings and the amp model gain) you loose almost all highs and lows and only get high mids. Essentially the mustang will sound as a transistor radio from the 70's.
When I can not go up to 2-2.5 on master volume (rare, this is not THAT loud) I use open back studio headphones and all is fine. (most DJ/hi-fi/beat/mosnter phones will sound like crap as they will have a massive mid scoop)

For those interested in a recommendation I use AKG K240, best earphones I ever had and really inexpensive (not to mention you can wear them for hours very comfortably) and as they are open back you can still hear other things in the room

I have a pair that I've had for over 15 years (yes, they've been making them that long). I have tried a lot of headphones in that time and nothing compares to the comfort in thier price range. That statement also speaks to their build quality. The only issue I have with them is that I wish they came with coil-cords as the straight cords get all tangley in short order.

Still my favorite cans.

I agree regarding the coil-cord.
well, you CAN buy a coiled cable replacement, but is a bit expensive to my taste

Thanks that's really helpful and explains a lot. I have had all the Line 6 stuff and individual pedals and nothing beats the Mustang 3 for me. I would still love a Deluxe Reverb 65 but it would be a real extravagance. In comparison with the 68 I preferred the sound of the Mustang. It's a real gift from Fender to guitar players.

Yep new to the Mustang myself but having owned all the POD stuff at £400 a shot I can tell you that this provides better amps sounds and a better interface all in a more jam/ gig usable package. I think where the POD beat the mustang is on the FX, there is greater choice and I felt the quality was better. In particular I am struggling with the Reverbs on the high gain amps - at the momemt the best I can do is 'small hall'. Not a great fan of plate and the spring just sounds wrong - perhaps some more tweaking is required.

But overall I am impressed with the whole shabang. Thinking that I can gig this without my pedal board by using the 4 + 2 button switches and maybe buying EXP-1.

Agree with everyone - you need to turn up to hear the patches properly - they really come alive.

you'll definitely find the 4+2 + EXP1 a very viable gigging proposition. My Marshall DSL 50 and 4x12 with a pedalboard the size of Rhode Island is gathering dust, since I got a Mustang and the floor pedals.
I've had a Boogie MkV, various Marshalls, a Rivera Fandango, and still Mustang blows me away for the money it costs.
