Greetings,

Just got a Mustang III v2 and love love LOVE it. This is my first post here so am not sure how much the people at Fender check in on it but was wondering if anyone from that end or hardcore users know if there's a possible firmware update in the V2's future that will smooth out patch changes? The dropout is pretty subtle and I've read about it in a few reviews but I play music with a lot of quick changes and although it's not a deal breaker by any means the dropout bugs me. My usual rig/sound is switching between Fender cleans and Marshall high gains in my songs, and doing it a LOT (not just 2-3 times, more like 4-5 times that).

I ended up using my Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 into the front of the amp which sounds excellent but sure would like to take advantage of all that the Mustang has to offer if I could. Thanks for any input!

Based on past experience of firmware updates, Fender are very tight-lipped* about what's coming in the future: if there'll be an update, when it will be, and what will be in it. The first they publicly say is when they announce it's available.

(*Not a criticism, pretty much all large companies are like this)

My guess is that this is quite fundamental to the DSP system they use and the way the firmware controls it. It's probably hard to prevent a small lag as the system needs that little bit of time to reconfigure itself with the new preset settings.

Having said that, I know there are other units from other manufacturers that do have more seamless preset changes. But then those other units are a lot more expensive to buy, because they need to contain more expensive DSP hardware/software in order to provide that seamlessness.

This isn't the first time I've heard people talk about the delays in switching presets, but I've never experienced it. Granted I don't do it a lot, but there are certain songs where I do it several times in the song and they're pretty different presets and I've never had any perceptible delay. The one I can think of right off the top of my head switches from a Twin with a fair amount of delay, reverb, and chorus to a Hi-Watt with a touch of echo. It switches at the end of one measure and the beginning of the next...no perceivable delay.

I wonder what the difference is? Could it be where I store them which is up in the middle of the presets. I reserve presets 40 through 70 for the presets I'll use in a show and I set them up the day before the gig. It makes me wonder if the constant replacement and reorganization of the presets somehow keeps the electronic logic involved in switching more efficient somehow....hmmmm... :?:

Thanks for the responses! Interesting, I'll try experimenting with different amp combos next to each other. I can definitely deal with the dropouts (they are pretty minimal) but it would be awesome if they could somehow address it. Boss and Zoom stuff, especially in the past couple of years, has really nailed the seamless patch changing thing. But still, for an amp that sounds as good as this does for $300 I really can't complain too much...

It's anywhere from so slight if any at all to very distracting to the point it isn't usable in a live situation. Experiment with it....set 2 identical presets in sid by side slots and try it. You'll see the lag is minimal or not even there. then add a effect to one but not the other. then you may notice a slight lag. With totally different models you'll notice a lot more. I got mine years after i stopped gigging regularly so it's not an issue for me. But even if i still were playing out it wouldn't really be because i tend to use one patch most of the time and have little reason to switch patches. When i did gig i used a single channel amp and a clean boost pedal and thats all i needed. so with the mustang, anything past that simple setup is all cake. I suppose if i did i WOULD klike to be able to because it might be nice to be able to switch to a lead tone thats different at times than a clean boost or even leave the pedal at home and use a patch for that always. But again, just not necassary so it doesn't bother me. But if you need to do that the best advice i can offer is experiment and find which models and settings create the least lag. Hopefully fender will fix that in V3 or in a firmware update, tho i suspect if they do it'll be in the former.
