Hi

After a long lay off due to illness I am back into getting my M III ready for gigs again. I have updated the firmware and opened Fuse and it's all connected. When I click on the Amp sub menu in Fuse it lists 12 amps. I thought there were supposed to be 17. Is there something else I need to download to update this?

Thanks

Mick

You may have the Mustang III version 1. They only had 12 amp models. It was not until Version 2 that the number of amp models increased to seventeen. Sorry to say, a software update cannot provide you with the additional 5 amp models. Unfortunately, from the consumer's point of view, you will have to purchase a new version 2 of your M III amp.

That makes sense. Are there any other major differences that would make an upgrade worthwhile?

Personally, i love the AC30 model and there's no fizz with the version II amps.

Joebeets mentioned the background noise issue on the version 1 amps. I never owned one or even heard one, but from reading here on the Forums, it was a design problem that Fender addressed when they brought out Version 2. And I own two Mustang III V.2 and a Mustang I V2, and they are all equally quiet and fine amps. They are so good at what they do, that if I had to live with only a solid state amp, it would definitely be a Mustang III, IV, or V, V2!

To OP: if you already have a Mustang V1 (from your post it sounds like you do) and are happy with it, then do not worry about this. Some amps had problems of varying severity for some people. If yours isn't one of them, then you're fine. (I'm not dismissing the problem, just saying if you haven't had to worry about it before, you don't have to start worrying about it now).

To answer your question: key differences between V1 and V2 amps are:
- the extra amp models and effects
- possibly different/updated DSP hardware
- addition of XLR line-out sockets
- ability to configure (some/all?) EXP-1 settings on the amp itself (rather than needing FUSE)
- ability to have fx loop before or after cab emulation ('before' better matches the loop location on real valve/tube amps; 'after' is of more practical use in some situations, eg if using a looper pedal)
- different cabinet cloth
- different printing on control panel
- modified power supply for power amp

I think that's it, I'm sure others will add anything I've missed.

My opinion: if you have a V1 Mustang and are happy with it, there's no automatica need to change to a V2, unless you particularly need one or more of the items listed above. The V1s are still perfectly capable amps.

I have a v1 MIII as well. While I'd LIKE to have the new models, and possible some of the fx, I don't need them enough to shell out for a new amp. Mine works more than well enough for me. Not to mention, there's already more options than I'll ever use.

I HAVE a bunch of stomp boxes already, so the new od and distortion fx are kinda moot.

and, unless you are buying this to gig with, or for recording, perhaps-a lot of the new stuff won't be missed much anyway. I have no need for an xlr out- I'm a LONG way from being able to play out- but the fx send works, and you can always stick a mic in front of it.

To me, most of the new amps fall into the it'd be nice to have, but... category. As a tweed fan, I'd love to have the '57 Twin amp, but I already love the Bassman, and there's the champ and deluxe, too. ( and you can change the cab model to a 2x12c if you like)
