Hi. New to this community so pardon if I didn't post this in the right place.

Looking seriously at a Mustang III but I'm curious:

In the manual, to select effects or change effects settings, it says to hold down the effect button and turn the data wheel. I know it sounds obvious, but does that actually mean you have to hold down the button WHILE turning the wheel? If that's so, is it a two-handed operation? Every time? Or can you kinda hold down the effects button with one finger (pinky?) while turning the data wheel with your other fingers?

This is not a foolish question for me. I have a Mustang II right now and everything can be done with my left hand, with the amp sitting on the floor by my left side as I practice. If the Mustang III is a two-handed operation, I have to give buying one more thought.

Thanks.

I can understand your confusion. The manual is sort-of correct, but misleading. No, it isn't a two-handed operation. Here's what you do:

- To turn an (already configured) effect on or off, you press the effect's button (eg MOD or DELAY) briefly and release it.

- To configure an effect, you press and hold the effect's button for about half a second, until the amp's display switches to the effect settings, then release the button.

That is the difference the manual is trying to emphasise when it says to "hold" the button. But you only hold it until the amp display changes, then you release it. That part isn't clear in the manual. So yes, you can then use the same hand to press/turn the data wheel, to actually change the settings.

In fact, if you do continue to hold the button down, you can't change the effect settings with the data wheel (at least not on my V1 amp, don't know about V2 Mustangs). So you have to release it.

I'd recommend you go to a music store and try the Mustang 3, I think you'll be impressed with how easy it is to control and configure.

For absolute completeness, there are a couple of operations that require you to hold down one button while doing something else, but they're things you'll only do rarely. See this topic for info: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=94655

One thing Scott missed mentioning is that once you are "in" the stomp settings (or other effect) , you then tap the data knob to step through to the next virtual knob.
This can seem a bit of a pain on the amps, where you can have up to 10 virtual knobs (two sets of 5) but you can always get to the real knobs on the amp (for first 5 items) so it's not a big deal in use.
I bet this may all sound confusing - but it quickly makes sense once you use it - it's not perfect but it's very usable.

[I believe Peavey modeller amps gives you real knobs that switch function - that would be better.. but the Peavey amps don't sound so good on any demo I heard..]

I can guarantee you'll find an MIII loads easier to use than an MII - that was what I had first too.

I will try harder next time! :)

For the amp settings, there are two sets of six, so twelve total. For all other effects, it's one set of five. I only noticed very recently that the amp screens have six (smaller) virtual knobs compared to the five virtual knobs on the effects screens.

I agree this is a pain. I would prefer it if there were a row of six little real knobs above or below the LCD screen, which one could turn to change the corresponding parameter, rather than having to step through them all by pressing the data wheel.

You'll absolutely love it, good choice. And trust me on this....the user interface and it's ease of use is second to none. You quickly get the hang of it and can make quick changes almost as easy as just grabbing knobs on a tube amp. I never even use the knobs, only the data wheel. I find it quicker and easier and you can get to all settings including those that don't have physical knobs.

Right! I've had my Mustang III for only a few days now and I love it. And controls are really easy to use.

Now, another question: I don't understand many of the terms used in some presets, like "plate reverb" and other terms like "tape delay" and "simple compressor."

Is there somewhere I can go in the forums to get a glossary of terms? On the Fender site? YouTube? I really want to have a better idea of how this all works but I feel lost.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Ed

Plate is supposed to sound like a plate reverb, a verb used in studios in the early day. (and today for those who still find them better than digi) Tape delay duplicates a tape delay where a actual tape loop was used and they tended to sound less bright so the repeats fit in better w/o interrupting the dry signal. Simple compressor is just that....a compressor thats not as configurable but one knob makes it easy to use.

But theres the thing....you don't need to know technically what they are, only which sound good to you. Thats all that matters, so just try everything and find what you like best.
