Six months ago, as a newbie (still am!), I posted a question asking whether the Mustang III(v.1) amplifier had a line out function which might relieve me from having to continually mike the amp for live performances? A knowledgeable forum member responded that: "on the Mustang 3 (v1 and v2) you have a 'hidden' line-out: simply take the signal from the FX-send and go direct to the PA". Armed with that information, the microphone went back in the drawer and I was happy with the simplicity of using a cable from the FX send to the PA board.

Then last week, I discovered something surprising and disconcerting. When I turned my amplifier master volume to zero, which killed any sound coming from the amplifier, I could still hear sound coming from the PA!? Why? I assumed that the amp's master volume completely controlled the signal to the PA as it does to the amp's speaker. What am I missing here and what can I do about that :?

The Master Volume only controls the Mustang's own power-amp section and internal speaker. It also controls the headphone volume. All other outputs come before the Master Volume. In particular for this question, the fx-loop (both fx-send and fx-return) come before the Master Volume in the signal chain.

The volume of the signal to the fx-loop is controlled by the preset settings - the preset volume itself, and any other level/volume controls within the modelled amp and effects. The EXP-1 volume control also affects this.

Further, the level of the USB output and the XLR output level (V2 amps only) can be separately controlled - both of these come after the FX loop.

I find this diagram very helpful in understanding the overall signal order and controls in the Mustangs:

(even though this diagram was created by Fender for the specific purpose of describing the V2 effects loop operation, it has so much info in it it's great for understanding a lot more about the amps, both V1 and V2, too)

As for what you can do about your particular situation: I think using the EXP-1 is your best option, as you can configure it as a cross-preset volume control (ie so the volume stays where you want it when you change preset). If you were to control the volume to the fx-send using the Volume knob, that would be reset every time you change preset.

WOW...thanks Scott for that detailed and seemingly easy to understand answer. I don't keep the amp with me (at home). It's at a friend's house where we jam once a week. When I get there next, I will go through what you said and give it a try. Once again, many thanks for your insight.
