Is there any way to convert downloadable Mustang III presets to run on Mustang I (V1) - or as close as possible????

I'm aware that I cant dload presets for III without such an amp.

I only have the I (V1).

you can import them as-is.
The speakers between the two amps have different characteristics so you may need small tweaks, but Fender did a good job at making them sound very similar. Less difference than the one introduced by having different guitars.

To expand on this:

All Mustang presets are the same*, across the whole amp range: Mustang 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Floor. Any Mustang model will work with any preset. They should in theory all sound the same - as previous reply noted, differences in speaker unavoidably impact that a bit (although the amp's internals are supposed to take account of that to smooth out the differences).

So, just launch FUSE, download whatever preset you want, and save it to your amp. It doesn't matter which amp it was created on, or for. It will still work on your amp.

*One important caveat to the above: there are V1 and V2 Mustang amps. The V2 amps add some more amp models and effects. A V1 preset will sound identical on both a V1 and V2 amp. If you have a V1 amp, and you download a preset created on a V2 amp, that uses some of the new features of the V2 amp, you can still use it on your V1 amp. FUSE takes care of 'downgrading' the new features in the V2 preset to the closest equivalents that exist on your V1 amp. So the preset won't sound identical, but you can still use it.

All the above is based on you having the latest firmware on your amp and the latest version of FUSE. If you have an old version of FUSE that predates the V2 amps, then you should upgrade it, otherwise the above V2 'downgrading' won't work.

To expand upon what scott-uk said, how this "downgrading" works is as follows:
  • The closest V1 amp model will be substituted V2 amp model BUT, the individual control parameters (gain, volume, treble, mid, bass etc.) are not loaded. Instead, FUSE loads the parameters of the corresponding "Basic" model. For instance, if the preset uses the ’60s Thrift model, which is not found on V1 amps, the "Basic '57 Champ" preset will be loaded
  • If the preset uses an effect that is not supported by the V1 amp, that effect is simple omitted.

Obviously this is not going to get you all that close to what the preset is intended to sound like. To get around this short coming (and if you're really determined), I suggest you do this:
  • Close FUSE.
  • Turn off your amp or disconnect the USB cable from the amp.
  • Start FUSE once again (with no amp connected) and load the preset.
  • Get yourself paper and pencil and make note of all the settings (gain, volume, treble, mid, bass etc.) and don't forget to go to the "Advanced" amp settings and note those settings as well (noise gate, sag, bias and cabinet emulation).
  • If the preset uses FX that are not on V1 amps, make note of what they are as well as those control parameters.
  • Close FUSE, turn on/reconnect your amp, restart FUSE and load the preset once again.
  • Tweak all the control settings on the substituted amp model to reflect those in the notes you took.

As far as the omitted FX, most of the new FX (but not all) are distortion/OD FX. You'll have to make your own substitutions here. For instance, if the omitted FX is the "Greenbox" stomp (Tube Screamer emulation), you may be able to get close using the info found in this thread:

http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=74894&hilit=808

Now, granted, this amounts to a lot of hoops to jump through and it is not going to give you the exact same sound of the original preset. But, it will get you a lot closer than what FUSE will default to. To get any closer you would need an audio example of the preset in use to compare yours to.

Sorry I missed the fact the OP owned a v1.
Your answer is spot on.

Thanks for the info and help.

Time to start downloading presets and taking notes re settings.

Quote:
is not going to give you the exact same sound

especially as I will be using different guitars with different pickups and a different pair of hands :P

At least I'll be in the ballbark and will have to adjust settings for each guitar.

Yes, a preset will often get you very close, way easier than starting from scratch.
Also a good way to learn what different pedals and effects do (match the sound you hear to how it was created)
