I've been playing through my new mustang for around a month now, although I'm enjoying it immensely something is really bugging me and I wanted to find out if was just me or a common "phenomenon".
When playing through headphones, new recommended by the guitar shop decent headphones, I can set all the pre sets, spend hours tweaking saving for each guitar I use etc and be very happy with it. Then next day play it without phones not only does it sound different but not to put too fine a point on it, awful.
I have to start from scratch tweaking searching fiddling saving. It's getting so frustrating.
Never really used phones before, my last amp vox valvetronix the socket was bust so no experience with working phones. Is it me???
Spending less and less time actually playing, just messing with settings. Never mind recording which is what I got the mustang for! 8)

You are not alone sir.

You can find many discussions on this

When I first got my Mustang II, I used it with headphones a LOT so I could learn the amp late at night and not keep everyone awake. Same exact thing. Hello Cleveland in the headphones was not so much with the cans off. I ended up restoring the amp to factory, starting from scratch and being real careful about tweaking presets that I thought sounded good without the cans on. I have a couple presets setup for headphone use but for the most part I just live with it. You might be able to find headphones that give you a closer match but you might find yourself trying out a lot of models.

Simple solution....whenever you tweak a preset for phones, save it along with all the other "headphone presets" to a bank upstream somewhere. Maybe add a "H" to the end of the patch name so you know which patches are those you tweaked for phones. This is what i do for one of my guitars that doesn't sound good with most of my regular patches. I tweak each one to sound good with that guitar and save them to a ban dedicated to that guitar.

Thanks for the replies guys, good to know I'm not alone! 8)
Think I'll probably go down the factory restore and start from scratch route. Sounds sensible.
Only trouble I foresee now is that I find it much easier to find great tones through the phones, they seem far more elusive "straight".
Sure il get it sorted eventually, so far I've got presets for four different guitars achieving around six tones for each mixed with afore mentioned headphone struggles it's git quite messy. The joys being a guitarist

It is OK if you hear a small difference between the tone heard in the can and with the speaker.

Difference should be sensible if you shape the tone with the speaker ant THEN use the headphones.

IF you shape tone with headphones and you heave huge diffrence with speakers, maybe the haedphones has a verydifferent eq than the speaker.

In this case i suggest you to try different headphones, since to me the best compromise is to shape the tone with the headphones and uise it for all outputs since it is also the best sounding in recording.

Also consider your mood. If the tone sounds awful with the speaker, first of all try it again with the headphones, sometimes it sounds awful the same becouse it is not the right tone for your actual "mood". This is "almost" science! ;)

You might have something there with the mood thing mordor.
I tend to find tones have "changed" from whence I last left them, even if only the next day.
But try as I might I'm still struggling to get a tone through the amp that's as sweet as the phones.
Mostly through the twin reverb model, jangly, breaking up slightly, plenty of reverb.
Nailed it perfectly through the phones but straight through the amp :(
Read on another forum that it's almost certainly down to inferior speakers?
I have the mustang 1 with 8" speaker so sounded feasible as, I guess, that the speakers are the only circuitry bypassed when using phones, but I dunno.
Could get costly buying bigger better amps in desperate search of elusive tone.
Got a big anniversary party coming up and was hoping to dazzle my friends and relatives with my talents!! Passing the headphones round guest to guest May just kill the mood
