I have the Mustang III V-2 combo, with the MS2 and MS4 footswitches, and I'm considering getting a EXP-1 as well. So let's say I have a patch with a chorus effect, which I can switch on/off with the MS4 in mode 3. Could I then also program the EXP-1 to switch on/off a tremolo, which is also in the MOD effect bank, and if it can, would this then automatically switch off the chorus, or could I then use chorus and tremolo simultaneously? Or can you absolutely not use two different effects from the same effect bank (Stomp, Mod, Delay), even if you have both a MS4 and an EXP-1?

The EXP-1 doesn't give you any extra effects. It just provides a pedal control for one parameter (and you can pretty much choose any parameter) of the effects already in the preset.

So no (using your example) you can't use the EXP-1 to get both a tremolo and a chorus in the same preset.

Ok (and I realize now that probably was a stupid question), but would it be technically possible to use the EXP-1 to change the effect then, for instance turn the chorus off, and switch the tremolo on instead (or vice versa)?

No, the EXP-1 can't do this. It can do two things:
- act as a volume pedal (conceptually, this volume is after the amp model but before the post-effects, so it doesn't cut-off reverb and delay tails etc).
- be assigned to one parameter of an effect in the preset, and so vary that parameter

You can switch between these two using the pedal (push down the toe end, the LED changes from red to green etc). But you can't change which effect parameter is assigned using the pedal, neither can you use the pedal to change between effects.

Ok, thanks, and I guess that logical when I think of it.. Can you use it for automatically switching on and off effects also, by the way? For instance; when you move the pedal, you turn the wah on (or whichever other effect), and as long as the pedal is in the middle somewhere, the effect is on, and when you move it back to full heel (or toe) position, the effect is turned off again?

You can't use the EXP-1 explicitly to turn an effect on and off. However, you could assign the pedal to an effect parameter that effectively does the same thing - for example, a 'level' control on a distortion that when set to zero (eg heel position) is just the original signal. Then as you move the pedal towards the toe position, the 'level' increases adding more distortion.

But really, the MS-4 and MS-2 are intended for turning effects on and off. You can use the MS-4 in 'mode 3' to explicitly turn the stomp, mod and delay effects on and off within one preset. Or you could create two presets that are identical, except that one has an effect turned on and the other has it turned off. Then using the footswitch to select one or other preset has the effect of turning it on or off without otherwise affecting the sound (although reverb tails etc may suffer...).

Ok, I guess that would work with for instance a chorus or a delay, but not with a distortion effect, since having that switched on will affect the sound considerably, even with the level on zero. And I guess it would also work fine with a touch wah, where you could just set the EXP-1 to control the "mix" parameter, but not with a regular wah, since you then would want the EXP-1 to control the "freq" of course. I know about the MS-2 and MS-4 modes and all of course, and I'm using them exactly like you're describing. I was thinking thatmaybe I could simplify things more with the EXP-1, but I guess that's not possible after all. Thanks for your advice and help anyway :-)

You're making this WAY too complicated. Just read the expression pedal details in the manual. We could go on and on with the "what if's" forever. Just read the manual!

Ok, sorry if you think I'm making it complicated; I just wanted to find out what the EXP-1 could and couldn't do before buying it, since this seemed a bit difficult to find out. And I used this forum since this is supposed to be a place where one could ask questions and get help from other Fender users. And I also got good help from scott-uk, who answered my complicated questions in a polite manner, and I've also thanked him for that :-)
