Can I use my Mustang III (whatever amp modulation) with a Boss Metal Zone, or other distortion gear?

I'm asking this because the amp isn't properly for metal music.

Anybody has this configuration?

Sure. I do it all the time. (different pedals, though)

Just do the opposite of what you'd do with a tube amp- use the pedal's gain to add flavor, not the level boost to kick the amp. Don't overdrive the input, and you'll be fine.

I know it's popular to SAY that the Mustang won't do metal, but give the 90's metal and metal 2000 models a whirl- there's a LOT of gain there. Plus, you have a choice of 7 different dirt box stomps already in the amp.

I've found my Boss Metal Zone and Metal Muff to sound like complete utter crap compared to the Metal 2000, American 90 and Brittish Colour-emulations though. They sound much bigger and fatter compared to distortion pedals.

Metal Muff especially, had do turn the treble to 9'o clock to prevent my ears to bleed.

So far I've used:

Fulltone OCD
Fulltone Plimsoul
MXR Custom Badass '78 distortion (Marshall in a box kinda vibe)
MXR Custom Badass Modified OD
MXR Classic Distortion
Boss Blues Driver
Way Huge Swollen Pickle Jumbo Fuzz. ( not the best results, but I strongly suspect I'M the problem, not the pedal, lol.)
TC Electronics MojoMojo Overdrive.

With my MIII v1.

Currently, the OCD and the '78 distortion are living in the main input. I can get some sweet metal chugging tones, using one or the other! (mainly with the Bassman and '65 twin models, as that's what I play with most often)

The OCD has something like 26db of boost, so I keep the volume knob at unity gain. As this pedal straddles the line between overdrive and distortion, the gain knob will take you from almost clean to RAWR!!!! Plus, you can switch between low peak (distortion), and high peak (overdrive) modes via a mini toggle.

The '78 is interesting. It's not what I expected of a pedal called distortion, into a clean amp. You need to really crank up the gain to get any appreciable filth, if running it into a clean amp. What you DO get is that "hot" cranked amp vibe, with the extra harmonics and all. Very much a "lead guitar" kind of sound.

Into an already dirty amp, it's a WHOLE different animal. NOW it gives you lots of filth! The Classic Distortion is virtually the same, just w/o the crunch switch. You also get all the "cranked stack" mojo like with a clean amp.

I take full advantage of that sound, often turning it on with my clean twin reverb preset to get a hot low gain lead tone. The OCD is used to add dirt, pure and simple. It stacks very well with the amp's own distortion, and with the '78.

Sorry, no video or audio. Not only am I clueless as to how to upload such a thing (old guy here!), you really don't want to hear me mangle any songs anyhow- trust me!

Besides those two, the Boss Blues Driver is my favorite. Just a great sounding pedal.
