I want to experiment with running non-guitar input through the effect and modeling of my mustang i v2.
Is there a way to do this safely? I suspect the line out output from a PC sound card has different electric characteristics from a guitar pickup?

Is there an cheap adapter what would let me do so?

The information in the following link should provide an educated answer to your question:

Errata...

I just noticed that the 3rd paragraph on that page has an error. It reads:

Quote:
"The other issue that you need to be aware of is impedance. Guitar amps are designed to accept a high-impedance input, and plugging in a low-impedance, line-level signal will result in an increase in amp hiss."

It should read:

If you know someone that owns a soldering iron (and how to use it), you can save yourself some exorbitant amount for a fancy box by making your own adapter. All you need are two resistors, two jacks and something to put them in (Altoids tin etc.).

The 40 dB L-pad in the following link should put you right in the ball park:

http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/line_to_mic.html

Low impedance mics are around 600 ohms which is about the same as a guitar with non-active humbuckers (single coils are a bit lower than humbuckers).

And, just so you'll know, you can use the same adapter to run a -10 dB line level audio signal into the mic input of a laptop that has no line level input. The mic preamps are pretty crumby on most sound cards so, don't expect the best quality. But you can do it in a pinch.

Does this mean you can run a signal directly from an electric guitar (with non-active pups) into a sound card's mic input? Yes, it does (with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter cable). Although if you push it through a few pedals first, the signal will get a little too "hot". So, leave out the DS1, TS, Rat and especially the SHO  ...
