I have a Mustang III & V and I love them both. The III is great for practising in my apartment and the V sounds great with the band. I'm in the market for a 2x12 so I can meet in the middle and be a bit more portable. All the 2x12s I have found are quite expensive so I am thinking about buying a second 4x12 cabinet, chop it down the center, rebuild and wrap at the cut and would end up with 2 2x12's for half the price of most on the market. Since it is already wired stareo I can't see this being much of an issue, what do you guys think? I think the only hard part would be the cloth and even that doesn't seem really hard with a straight edge.

The Mustang V head shouldn't overpower the new cabs should it?

That doesn't sound all that much "more portable" to me. By my count you would be moving two cabinets rather than one. But, whatever trips your trigger I guess. :?

Are you saying you want to use you Mustang V head with ONE 2x12 cabinet, or that you want to use TWO 2x12 cabinets instead of one 4x12 cabinet?

If you want just one 2x12 cabinet, made from half a Mustang 4x12 cabinet, then I presume you'll wire one speaker for the left channel and one for the right. In that case, then be aware that you'll have impedance-matching problems and also just one speaker per channel won't be able to cope with the power from the Mustang head (if you plan on turning it up).

If you're going to use two 2x12 cabinets, then your plan sounds sensible - if a lot of work. Although I agree with dunedindragon that you aren't really gaining much in terms of portability. The main advantage I can see is that you can position the two cabinets apart from each other to improve the stereo image, if indeed you're using stereo effects and have an audience that even cares about such things!

As far as portability i am only talking about moving one of the 2x12s at s time. The objective is not to hook them both up at the same time because there really is no benefit. I want to build 2 independent 2x12s, one would stay at my warehouse at work and one i could drag around. One 4x12 stays in the jam space so all i ever need to transport is my head.

So Scott, the impedance is my main concern as electical isnt my thing. A friend plays through a custom built 2x12 and a jcm 900 which goes like hell. I pretty much want to build a custom cab with parts from the 4x12 because most of what i need is there and in the end its still cheaper.would i have impedance issues if both 2x12s i build are mono instead of stereo. Only one would ever be hooked up at a time and i really dont need them stereo being i don't really notice a difference anyways. If l, for some reason i wanted to run them both at once stacked, then one mono cab left and one right.

Hopefully its not too confusing lol. I want s second cab being ine stays at the jam space but another 4X12 is overkill. Any 2x12 im looking at is $600-700. I could make one out of the mustang and throw away parts and still save money! What i dont understand is what makes a factory mono 2x12 different than what i would build this to be.

To go a bit further in a side direction.

That Mustang 4x12 cab was built to handle the power of the 150 watt amp head- using all 4 speakers. If you want to build/ redneck engineer a 2x12 cab out of it, you may need to beef up the two speakers in it, to be able to handle the increased power load. The MIV 2x12 combo uses different speakers- with a different power rating- to handle that same load.

Then of course comes the impedence issue, which I'm totally clueless about, so won't even attempt to answer.

Ya power and impedence is my weak spot lol.

I'll likely just buy the 4x12 and drag it around, its cheaper than most 2x12s out there. If fender made one for the mustang I'd buy it.
