I've been trying to fool around with the Champ amp on my Mustang and it seems no matter how much I turn dials I can't get a tone that's not very dark and almost muddy with either of my guitars, a Fender Tele and a Dearmond Les Paul style. Could there be something wrong with my amp or am I maybe not understanding the Champ setting? Anyone got any ideas? I've heard some good things about the original Champ.
Thanks.

I think the Champ is supposed to be a darker sounding model, anyway. Mine sounds like that, too. It's that old school tweedy kinda sound. The Champ will give you a kind of cheap and nasty crunch that's addictive. While I haven't noticed it being excessively dark, I have noted that it isn't particularly bright, like many of the Fenders. I'm a bit of a fiend for the warm dark tones anyway.

Just for grins, have you checked that your guitar's tone wasn't inadvertantly rolled off? I did that once... Almost brought the guitar back to the shop, thinking it was broken, lol. I sure felt dumb when I figured it out!

The Champ won't sound like the Bassman or Twin, both of which will be brighter sounding.

But that's why you have a Mustang - different amps on tap.

I like the Champ dirty. EQ straight up but with added bass, lots of volume, gain on 4 and a bit of reverb. Still plenty of clarity and top end there for me on a Strat. I can get it darker with the guitar controls.

The champ is modeling a 10" speaker. Try changing the speaker cab.

I like the champ with the princeton or Deluxe cab. Gives it a nice tight grit but a little cleaner to my ears than the default cab.

Love the champ
