I want to use my mustang III amp for recording purposes. I realize I can simply use the USB to connect to my Mac and record into my DAW, but I also have a Pod Studio UX2 which I would like to record into for other things. What's the best route to consolidate everything to the UX2? Ideally, I would mic this amp to the mic pres on the UX2, but I need silent/near silent recording.

How can I route my amp directly to that interface and also monitor through headphones on the UX2? Would this silence the amp's speaker or do I need to use the amps headphone out/fx loop?

Thank you!

What inputs are there on your UX2?

If it has USB and accepts ASIO input, you should be able to connect your Mustang to it with USB.

If it has normal audio inputs, you can use the headphones-out or fx-loop-send on you Mustang to send the audio to the UX2 (with a suitable cable/connectors etc).

Using the headphone socket on your amp will silence the amp speaker - you imply the UX2 has a headphones-out socket that you would use for monitoring, so that would be fine. If you use the Mustang's fx-send, that doesn't silence the amp speaker, but you can turn the master volume to zero if you don't want sound through the amp.

Finally note the cab simulation applied by the Mustang may vary depending on whether you use the fx-send or the headphone socket - because the amp tries to voice the cab simulation appropriately either for the amp's own speaker, or for typical headphones.

Okay well, here's a photo of the UX2 with its various inputs and outputs.

It has a single USB port, which is strictly used to connect the UX2 to a computer.

Would I use a 1/4" instrument cable from the FX send to the instrument input, one of the line inputs, or the stereo monitor in?

Or do I plug the mustang's headphone out to the UX2's stereo monitor in?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, all this routing stuff confuses me.

Experiment with both of those and see which sounds better. The instrument input may be expecting a lower-level signal so turn the Mustang volume down first (as in the preset volume, not the Master volume - that doesn't affect the fx-send level) and slowly turn it up to the desired level.

No

That would probably work too. Especially if you want to use some of the stereo effects on your Mustang (your Mustang 3 has a mono fx-send so you'd lose the stereo-ness).

Hi Guys,

Thanks, as always to scott-uk for his detailed and thoughtful assistance. I don't have much to add at the moment. But eman-87, please let us know if there is anything we can assist with from our end.

Best Regards,

Alan
