I like the Idea of using the XLR out for live use from my M-IV but kind of thinking there better for recording where you can really take the time to dial in the sound but it still seemed a little lacking compared to the tones I get from the speaker, Mic'ing the amp with my SM-57 gives me a better copy of my tone with plenty of rich dynamics.

So far I think mic'ing the amp is better for live use, I will keep experimenting with the XLR out it would be nice not to use a mic.

XLR.. and I also use the USB and I've done that on an M II and M III

Well, they all sound pretty much the same - even M II vs M III (yeah, I know they should).. so really mic and speaker has to be fatter 'n' better than DI XLR, but XLR or USB is still very usable.

I don't have a choice since my amp doesn't have xlr out.. Sennheiser e609 has been great. The shape of the e609 allows me to just hang the mic in from of the speaker - no need for a mic stand. It is a cheap mic but it sounds good enough to me.

Cheers,

I always prefer to mic the amp as it's more accurate at capturing the tone I hear coming out of the amp. But that's a double-edged sword. We do a lot of live recordings of our performances into a 16 channel digital recorder, so I do end up with some cross-feed into my channel from the other instruments. As long as I'm careful about my mic placement it's fairly manageable.
