Hello All,

Just purchased a Mustang Mini from Guitar Center.

Unpacked, plugged in the power adapter, powered on.

Took my Epiphone Les Paul, plugged it into input. Made sure that all knobs--Gain, Vol, Tone Master were turned up.

No sound through amp.

I went through the various presets and effects, but although clearly was "on"--heard hum--guitar made no sound through amp.

I tried a few different cords, but made no difference, although made the appropriate buzzes when I removed the cord.

This old Les Paul can be a bit cranky in the electronics when set to 1 pickup, but typically works fine when set to the other. Yet, no sound here.

So, I took out my Variax. Plugged in via the guitar port. Same thing. Amp on, but guitar would not play through the amp. Went through all the presets, effects. Tried several cords. (I also tried detaching the second Variax cable that runs to the Line6 Pod X3, with the guitar cable remaining attached, as well as reattaching it, while plugged into the Mustang Mini via the guitar cable. Neither of these changes made a difference)

Then, I took an inexpensive two pickup Yamaha Strat copy. Plugged in. Success--worked perfectly and consistently, through several on/offs of the amp, and plugins and outs.

So, I'm wondering--why might this be?

Although I've played for years, I'm not an expert on cords or amps. I wonder if:

-The Mustang Mini requires a certain type of 1/4" jack?

-A certain type of cable?

-Perhaps there is some setting on the amp that I am missing that would be required on the Variax for it to play through the Mustang Mini?

Would appreciate any input on this. The Mustang seems to be a sweet little practice amp, and would like to use various guitars with it.

Thanks.

Are you sure you didn't inadvertently plug the guitars into the footswitch input? It's right next to the guitar input and is a 1/4 plug the same as the guitar. Other than problems with the guitars there's no reason they shouldn't play through the Mustang.

Did you then leave the cable plugged into the amp, and try plugging the guitar end of the cable into your other guitars? If you haven't tried this, it would be a good troubleshooting step.

At this point it sounds as though your amp is fine. Either you have faulty guitars (or rather guitar electrics / sockets), or faulty cables / plugs, or dunedindragon's suggestion seems a good possibilty to check. If none of that, I suppose there is a very small chance the input socket on your amp is faulty.

No and no. The Mustangs work with completely standard plugs and cables.

No. The Mustangs know nothing about the Variax. As long as you use the standard audio output from the Variax (I'm assuming they have one!?), it should be fine. Obviously the special Line 6 'data' connection to the guitar is irrelevant here and you can't use that with the Mustang.
