What are "BIAS" and "SAG"? I am thinking there is more to it than some prejudice against the Screan Actors Guild.

I figured out they change the sound on my own experimenting. But what are they? Do these adjustment correspond to something on a tube (valve) amp or are they simply adjustments to further refine the sound on modeling amps that emulate tube amps? Do you adjust them at you see fit or is it based on other factors. For example Using a single coil pick up set them to ____; Or with high gain adjust to ____;

I did an internet search and I also searched these forums and didn't find an explination other than the suggestion to adjust them for various tone modification so I am inclined to believe they are a further adjustment for achieving tone Nirvana.

If it is beyound the scope of these fine forums to explain or define maybe someone would be kind enough point me in the direction of a referance material... Book title or web URL would be great.

Thank you.

Instead of editing my question let me add.... I do understand in the most basic way what BIAS and SAG are for general electical terms. I am not asking about that, but rather how are they used in guitar amplification. I have no experience with with tube amps. I have no experience with any amp apart from my M III.

Thanks again.

Basically they emulate tube behavior.

There are lots of topics on here about it and you also get a good couple of links if you google "sag and bias".

Here's one, where it's explained more in depth.

Hi i8chillywilly,

Thanks for your inquiry. This question comes up from time to time. There are various ways to describe it. But one of our Forum members "p90sdude" described it well. Please have a look. And let us know if we can offer any further detail, or assist further from our end.

Best Regards,

___________________________________________________________________________

SAG
• "LESS" - cuts down the tube compression/spongy feel higher volume, more responsive attack, less negative feedback, more intense, less controlled/restricted
• "MATCH" - (supposedly) emulates the particular model's natural tube compression character
• "MORE" - increases the tube compression/spongy feel overall, a little less volume, loss of initial attack, less intense, more controlled/restricted

NOTE: If you are not driving the amp model hard enough to exceed the sag/compressor threshold, you won't notice any sag at all.

BIAS
• low BIAS for a cleaner/cutting edge sound
• high BIAS for a warm sound with less head-room/more distortion
