I have an opportunity to buy a Mustang III v2 today, as they are on sale. EVERYTHING is expensive here in Chile!! Anyhow, I now see that you cannot record direct to computer through USB, as stated here:

http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... -computer/

Has anyone done this? How complicated does it end up being? I was going to buy the Line 6 Spider IV, which has this capability, supposedly, but I'm not sold on the sound of it.

If an interface is necessary, what would be the most effective, and least costly?
I play everything from 80s punk, to classical Turkish and Iranian music. The latter two are more of what I am interested in recording tracks into the computer and later emailing them to others to add to them.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Ren

I think you've mis-read the support article you cite.

You definitely CAN record from a Mustang amp direct to computer through USB.

The thing you can't do (and I agree the support page isn't perhaps as clear on the distinction as it could be) is play USB audio out from the computer, back to the amp through the amp's USB socket. The audio over USB is one-way: amp to computer. If you want to use the Mustang to play the sound from your computer, you have to connect the computer's line-out (or headphones-out) to the amp's aux-in socket.

It's quite straightforward. Fender even provide step-by-step instructions and tutorial videos. Search the Fender Support website for the keyword "ASIO" and you'll find everything you need. Most people seem to find it all easy to set up and it works fine. Other people encounter problems and it rarely becomes clear what the cause of the problem was (eg user error vs genuine technical restriction). It appears a small minority of PCs (or more likely odd stuff installed on those PCs) occasionally throw up incompatibilities, most/all of which will be surmountable.

A separate interface is definitely NOT necessary. Some people use them, I don't see the point; you're taking digital source audio, converting to analogue, then converting back to digital again. The direct amp-to-PC USB connection keeps it all digital and works out-of-the-box.

Agreed. The USB recording of the amp to something like garageband is easy and it just works. Turning up the USB gain in the FUSE software in the advanced amp settings helps get the levels right.

My experience is with a V1 Mustang3, but i'd imagine it is the same.
