Had this situation come up at our last gig; Our lead guitar player was using my Mustang III amp, he was sitting (health issues) directly in front of the drummer with the amp behind him and in front of the drummer. The sound level that was coming out the back of the amp was killing the drummer, so we wound up putting carpet over the back of the amp. Now I've installed a back cover with a small hole cut in it, to protect the speaker and to hopefully cut down on the sound level coming out the back of the amp. Testing it at home it seems to have helped. Any thoughts about the impact this may have on the amp?

I don't think it will hurt anything. Open backed amps make the sound seem all around. Some drummers like that because thy can hear what the guitar player hears. A closed back will make for a more punchy directional sound that pushes a more direct sound to the people out front.

Thanks banditt11, that's what I was hoping for, even with the back on it still seems pretty loud back there, we don't play in a really big place and the drummer is kinda boxed in where he's going to hear stuff any way. Thanks strings10927, I had thought about the warranty, but I'm getting to where it's about out anyway. Even so I still don't want to destroy it. but if I do, it's on me, thanks for the warning. I'm thinking after looking at the picture I'll turn it over and make a nice smiley face!

In short, you've made a bass reflex chamber with a ductless port facing the drummer. Expect the bass to have more boom. And hit the drummer, because of the port placement.
And as you seem to understand, you might blow a speaker, so don't crank it up all the way.

You may also watch out for heat becoming an issue, because that one center-placed hole isn't going to do much for air exchange. If it does get hot, you may want to add some holes near the top to let hot air out and some at the bottom to let cold air in, preferably on opposite sides. Perhaps even add a computer case fan.

 Your drummer will keep laughing during your gigs. You could add 'googly eyes' above the hole. Image

Here I am trying to figure out how to remove the back of my Mustang II without warranty voidation and low and behold, someone doing the opposite to their Mustang III. Amazing

Definitely go with the googly eyes.

arth1, that's a good idea about the additional holes for air ventilation, I can put those in and I don't think that would make too much sound difference and it may help save the speaker. Definitely googly eyes strings10927, and captianc maybe we should just trade and cure both our problems. I've now got a "to do list", as soon as I get it done I'll share the pic with ya! Thanks, everybody!

On my mustang 3 I put a cover on the back for some of the stages we play. I use Velcro to not impede the warranty.

This may be too obvious, why not just move the amp so it is not in front of the drummer?
Adding anything to the back of the amp will alter its sound.

some times I need the amp to project more out front. On larger stages it's miked but I angle it in so there doesn't have to be so much guitar in the monitors.

catainc I'm off to town tomorrow, first stop craft store to get googly eyes, I've changed my mind for now about trading. I don't know how you did that strings10927 but nothing on my end changed, I wish it had! davebols Wish I'd thought of the Velcro, that's a great idea and so easy to change out if needed. Ax Man Nano These guys have their "spots" and trying to move something just ain't gonna happen. Been working on the Tele all day, I've got another thread over there with all the pics, maybe late today I'll be done with that.
