Hi there,

Anyone using a "dedicated" wah external pedal like a Crybaby with their Mustang?

I have a Mustang 3 v2 with the 2 and 4 button footswitch along with the EXP1 expression pedal. I find the Mustang Wah works OK with the EXP1....but unfortunately takes up either the Stomp or Mod spot of a patch. You can't use both at once....Grrrr!

I was thinking about getting a dedicated wah pedal... but before purchasing one, I thought I'd ask any of you who have already done so. How does a dedicated Wah pedal compare to the built in Wah and Exp1? Is a Crybaby or other better than what I currently have?

I actually really wish that Fender would make the default for our Mustang EXP1 to be plug and play Wah/Volume AND NOT TAKE UP ANY OF THE STOMP/MOD/ETC slots. Obviously I know I can program the EXP1 to take care of any other parameters for any of the other effects but I rarely ever do that.

Basically, I'd love to be able to use my Wah, along with all the other slots for effects....rather than use EITHER a Wah or Stomp, or EITHER a Wah or Mod.

Love to hear your thoughts or advice.
Thanks in advance!

I use a crybaby on a M4 v2. It sounds great, just like a real amp should. We play out once a month and my tube snob 2nd guitarist can't get over how good my amp sounds live.

I use an Ibanez Weeping Demon. I even own a Live 6 M13 and use the same wah. I can't use a wah that needs a separate on/off button unless it's part of the treadle. I'm just not that dexterous with my feet. :)

I've been using a Behringer HB01 Wah pedal with my Mustang II (V1) and it works great with the onboard effects as well as pedals. Just gotta set it up right.

I know a lot of people say the Mustang doesnt take pedals well, but as long as you spend time tweaking the settings (on BOTH amp and pedals), lower the gain/vol on the amp's presets you can dial in some nice tones from your pedals. And of course rid of the chain leading into the pedal (via the FUSE software) before using your real pedals or you'll run into some nasty shite.

The EXP1 can be used as a volume pedal without using up an effects slot.

However, a Wah is an effect that needs DSP processing - so by definition the Wah has to be assigned to one of the slots. The limit on a total of four effects is down to the processing limit of the DSP in the Mustang.

I agree it's sometimes frustrating. Personally I don't find the limit of four a problem, but it is a pain that you can only have one effect from each category. I suppose one way to look at it is that the Mustang provides a cost-effective and convenient way to get a good amp with many built-in effects. If you happen to need any more effects (either in type or number), you only have to buy those extra ones, rather than needing to buy a whole pedal-board's-worth of effects.

The flip-side to that, from my own experience, is that I used to think that having lots of effects would be a good thing. Now owning the Mustang and having the chance to experiment with lots of permutations, I learn that often just one or two key effects does the job better - less is more, etc. Also, I've now learnt (again, from the simple tweakability available on the Mustang) using the gain/overdrive within the amp models often obviates the need for a distortion stomp effect, free-ing that effect slot for something else (eg a Wah).

I use a CryBaby 535Q in front of my MIII v1. Sounds great, no problems. I tried using my EXP as a wahwah and just could not find the sound I was looking for.
