Hi Mustang users, I just want to know what do you do to get more distortion from your amp? Are you just using hi-gain amp models, using built-in effect, or using external effect?

I found it if I using built in effect like overdrive or green screamer I loose some dynamic and attack from my note, and if I boost it using compressor (threshold at full, ratio at minimum, attack & release at full, and using level as clean booster) I could hear that signal is digitally clipped that sound annoying to me (especially when I record it via usb). But I love to hear Fender Twin model screaming.

Anyone use different method? Please share.

Hi azz_inside,

Just a thought - you may want to experiment with the tube emulation settings in the Advanced Amp panel in Fender® FUSE™. This panel offers "Bias" and "SAG" controls. This may be useful in helping you get the tone you are after.

Best Regards,

Alan

Personally I prefer the path of least resistance which is to select the amp model most likely to give me the sound I want and build from that. So if I want heavy distortion I start with one of the high gain amps. If I'm looking for clean I start with a Twin or Deluxe. If I'm looking for crunch I go with the Vox or maybe the Champ. That's the beauty of modeling.

If the amp itself doesn't offer the sound you want, you can use an affect pedal. Just don't get an overdrive or boost pedal, which generally depend on a tube amp breaking up a too high signal in a pleasing way. That won't happen with a solid state amp, which clip hard.

You can try a distortion pedal, though. TC Electronic Dark Matter is one that works well. (TC Electronic Rottweiler too, but it is too much for most music, even on the lowest settings.)

IMO - With increasing amounts of saturation and/or distortion, you will loose dynamics and attack of your notes. They'll become more squishy and perhaps muddied. This issue is not limited to the Fender Mustangs, but any overdriven amp.

Oh thanks, I set bias to +50% and can get a little more distortion and sag to less for more attack. :D

And maybe I just really like the sound of Twin get distorted.

And about dynamics even if compared to Princeton Reverb at full gain (or Brit 60s is the most dynamic amp on mustang IMO), I still can get cleaner tone when I roll down volume knob on my guitar, but if I use built in overdrive effect, it doesn't clean up very well.
And I was never liked TS (Green Box) style because it's too middy, and other stombox (distortion) is just too trebly and harsh if I use it on Twin.

Maybe fender can improve this effect (overdrive) to make it more dynamic response? :D and flatter eq maybe? :D

I've been impressed with the flexibility of the Super Sonic. You might want to try playing with it until you get the right sound. Pretty awesome for really saturated distortion sounds, but also for a nice crunch and all over in between.

signal is digitally clipped

If you're sure this is what's happening, then turn down the levels earlier in the signal chain (and turn up Master Volume etc to maintain final volume). Also check the USB Gain parameter isn't too high, if you're noticing this only when using USB. About a year ago there was an interesting topic in this forum, with detailed technical input from Ben Rathke at Fender, on this area. Worth searching for if you're interested.

I'd agree with the suggestion above to try the Super-Sonic amp model. The (real) Super-Sonic is essentially a Fender 'clean' circuit with a 'burn' channel that adds cascaded gain stages. Note there are two gain controls, that do different things - you just need to experiment (or lookup info on the gain controls on the real Super-Sonic - although the modelled Super-Sonic in the Mustang doesn't seem to behave quite the same as the real thing).

+1000. Having experimented with the 'pre-' overdrive effects, I've concluded that (at least for me) just picking the right amp model to start with and using what it provides on its own usually does the job. But then I don't really do 'heavy' distortion anyway!

don't get an overdrive or boost pedal

+1,000,000 - for all the reasons arth1 says, they don't work with SS amps.

Sometimes the simple solutions are the best - you might want to try turning down the volume on the guitar, and crank up the volume (not gain) on the amp. That might reduce clipping substantially.

lowering the pickups can also help with clipping

Ive been using effect pedals to boost my sounds and also get overdrive and distortion. Just go easy on the vol/gain knob ON the amp (not on the pedal!) or you'll get very undesirable mushy break up sounds from the amp. A good start would be to set both to around 2 and then turn on your pedals, then from there adjust the knobs on both pedal and amp to get the desired sound. And like the others have said, go into advance amp settings and play around with the SAG and BIAS settings, dont forget to experiment with the cabinet simulation as well!

Many people will say the Mustang doesnt take pedals well. While its true it may not take pedals as well as tube or even other SS amps, with proper configuration you can dial in some very nice colored tones from your pedals.

You could try what Dave Davies (Kinks guitarist) allegedly did with his VOX AC30: slash the speaker cone material with a razor blade to get a more distorted sound...

From other reports, it seems the Mustangs take pedals perfectly well, as long as one understands how to use the pedals properly - in particular, keeping the output level within the bounds of the amp's input range. For example, a boost pedal designed to overdrive a valve amp's input to create nice valve distortion makes no sense whatsoever on a solid-state/modelling amp. But a 'fuzz'-type pedal that distorts a signal without boosting it is an ideal choice for such an amp.
