Hey everyone,
I'm an electric violinist and guitarist who will be going on tour this summer. For my violin I run a powered speaker -> mixer/PA setup. When I need to play guitar, I tap my Switchblade to route the signal to my drive pedals and Deville. Basically, I really need to shrink the size of my rig and save some money. I use a lot of modulation / delay effects with both instruments and need to find a great amp modeler that doubles as a high fidelity speaker. *edit* I should clarify that I somehow don't want to use the amp modeling feature when playing violin, or at least download some ultra-clean preset.

Do you guys think the Mustang III is hi-fi enough to fill both of these roles?

Thanks

The m3 has some totally clean presets and a good direct out so I think it would work just fine for ya. I got mine to downsize too and I don't regret it at all.

An acoustic guitar amp may be more suited to your needs, like the Fishman Loudbox, Fender Acoustisonic, AER Compct, Roland AC series, etc. I just mentioned these because they are definitely downsized, with mod effects built in. Virtually every musical amp manufacturer makes a version of this type amp. Lots of feature/price comparisons await you. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Paj,
I've owned the Loudbox Performer, which was great, but it was entirely too expensive and does not fill the multiple roles that I need an amplifier for.

No, the MIII will not function well as an acoustic amp or powered speaker. It is not full-range. You need something with a tweeter.

Wow, that thing sounds very interesting. I had no idea that it included electric amp models! I'll have to check it out today.

I figured as much. Thanks for the straight answer. I will still try this to see if I like the voicing since my violin is a solid body and is therefore not even meant to sound acoustic.

I'm with jwoertz on the tweeter issue (and the other speaker-configuration features) implemented in acoustic guitar amps. I will also note that, sometimes, a tweeter is not necessary in certain cases and downright irritating in others. A badly designed piezo pu system coming through hifi can sound distractinging at the least and downright harsh in hifi. Nylon-string guitars don't seem to suffer as much from the lack of a tweeter as steel-string guitars do (I can generally plug my nylon-string Martin Backpacker right into a Marshall combo and it just sounds like it got really BIG---go figure!)---but they certainly benefit from their availablity. Sparkle and sizzle may not be a priority. Your axe might actually be voiced to play through a guitar amp. Not having a tweeter might remove a lot of bowing undesirables in the case of your particular electric violin---I don't know. I do know that I heard Richard Greene live, twice, with Seatrain, and he used a Fender Twin to permanantly blow everybody's mind with his electric violin playing. I guess you're going to have to try out your axe on the amps you're looking at---and I wouldn't wait until I got on the road to do it.

I don't know what type of pickup your electric violin has and that is usually addressed by a well-designed acoustic-guitar amp by multiple inputs or some sort of selector for the pu loading. If your violin has a magnetic pickup on it, maybe a guitar amp is a viable option.

Amps that do simultaneous duty for acoustic and electric pickups, like the Acoustasonic 150, are not the easiest to track down. The new Peavey Vypyr VIP3 amp is supposed to address multiple instrument issues---but that's all I know about it.

I'd suggest that you track down a site or two that caters to electric violinists and see what they're using. E.g.:
http://electricfiddler.com/

Again, good luck.
