I want to use my effects and footswitches for my mustang V when playing at a friend's, but I don't like lugging the cab so much. He's got an extra combo amp there. I don't know if the ohms line up, so I'm hesitant to just run the head into that speaker. Is there a way to simply use the Mustang as more or less an effects processor and play it through another amp?

Do not plug the speaker outputs of the Mustang V into the guitar input of another (combo) amp!

But yes you can do what you want. Plug the fx-send of your Mustang V into the fx-return of your friend's combo amp. If that amp doesn't have an fx-return, you could plug the fx-send of your Mustang V into the guitar input of the combo amp. But with the latter approach you'll get more tone colouration from the combo amp, added to the sound from the M-V. So you should set the combo amp for the 'cleanest' sound it will give.

In both cases start with the volumes of everything turned down low, and bring up to the desired level without any clipping. Note the 'Master Volume' on your Mustang V is irrelevant here (but turn it right down so you're not driving the M-V's power amp unnecessarily). You'll need to turn down the volume separately on all the presets you want to use. You may find it better to create two sets of your favourite presets; one with the levels set right for use with your M-V cab, and another with the levels set appropriately for use with the combo amp.

Am I missing something here? I don't see a load on the M5 speaker outputs!

UNTIL YOU HEAR OTHERWISE FROM FENDER TSL, DO NOT RUN YOUR AMP WITHOUT LOADS (SPEAKERS) CONNECTED TO THE OUTPUTS.
