Hi guys,
I'm the new happy owner of the Mustang IV V.2 amp. I tried to plug in my Digitech Solo XT looper. It has a stereo output, so I pluged in two cables into the return inputs. Than I put the guitar in the amp input, and the problem occurs. I can hear the sound from my looper on both of speakers (previously I've recorded some staff on it), but i can't hear my guitar. When I put the mono signal from looper I can hear looper on one speaker and guitar on second one. I've got only 3 guitar cables now, so I didn't put the stereo signal from FX send to the looper. I just wanted to play some distorted solos using mustang presets over clean guitar from the looper.
Is it possible to hear both signals: looper and guitar in stereo in the same time, not separated from each other?

---
Sorry guys for disturbing you, I've just solved the problem. I used a pair of small stompbox's cables to send the signal from FX send to my looper. Now guitar works fine. No more questions, I return to play. Cheers.

Indeed yes. There are two types of fx-loops on amps: 'parallel' whereby the amp mixes the fx-return with its own internal signal, and 'series' where the amp's own signal is fed out through fx-send and only the fx-return is then used by the amp. There are pros and cons to each; any particular amp will usually have only one or the other.

Mustang's have the latter type, 'series.' So when you plug something into the fx-return socket, it switches the amp signal to go through the fx-loop and not through the amp itself any more Hence, as you discovered, you have to 'complete the loop' by passing the amp signal from fx-send, through your external device, and back in through fx-return, in order to hear the amp signal.

Thanks scott for explanation, I didn't know about that issue. I had a Marshall amp before and it was parallel series, as you mentioned. I was worried for a minute that's something wrong with my mustang, but now its fine. I have to get two new cables though :)

Another option: You can also do a pseudo-parallel setup on a serial efx loop by patching from your efx send(s) into these, inserted into your efx return(s).

I got the Ditto X2 looper and was loving it. I wanted an amp and a nice set of FX. I thought an amp with built in FX would be a great way to kill all the birds with one stone. I thought the FX Send Return feature would be the ticket, and so did the sales guy. Picked up the amp on Friday, BUT I am disappointed that I was not able to get the looper do do what I want so far.
I connected the Ditto X2 through the stereo FX Send and return with 4 cables. Guitar is plugged into the amp. Problem: Not only does the Looper not play until the guitar input opens the Gate by playing on top of it, but I am only able to use ONE effect. And any change to another effect or sound, changes the looped signal as well. A distorted rhythm through distortion does not work with a lead going through the same effect well!

In other words, I would WANT the built in effects to be PRE-FX loop for this. I want to be able to create a loop with one Effect, have it continue to play, then switch to another for the next loop or to simply play on top of it.

Is there a way to CHANGE it so the FX send to POST internal amp FX? If not, it looks like I will have to return this, and move to a out board traditional pedal board set-up so I can place the signal path in the way I want.

I love the amp. I would hate to have to return it. HELP! :?

Hey blindbnisee

Check your amp if you got the newest firmware, the latest is 2.2. If not, update it. Then press few times amp's button 'Util' and find 'FX Loop position' and change on 'Looper pedal'. It should work now fine. I play with my Digitech soloXT and there's no problem.

blindbnisee: How, exactly, are you connecting the guitar, amp and looper unit? Exactly what cables, connect which sockets on each item, to which other sockets?

What you describe can't physically happen if everything is connected correctly: it should behave exactly as you are expecting. So let's triple-check that first.

The 'fx loop position' (as suggested by rebelsoul77) only affects the cab emulation, not the rest of the effects, so that shouldn't be relevant here. Also you don't need firmware 2.2 for this to work properly (although it's a good idea to upgrade for other reasons).

This diagram from Fender shows the fx loop position is always after all the effects:

Thanks so much Scott! That worked. I did not see the loop menu until I updated to 2.1 (witch seems to be the latest). I connected it all the same and for some reason like the diagram shows it SHOULD have been post either way. What this diagram is not showing is that in looper pedal mode, the looped sound from the pedal does not go BACK through the Post Effects. This is perfect.

Just happy it works. Now I can keep it. Unless the wife finds out I bought it. LOL!!!

edit - I misread the previous post

Hmmm, the way I read the diagram, it does show this: the pre-effects, amp modelling and post-effects are all on the top line, then the arrow goes down to the various options for the fx-loop position etc, but nothing ever goes back up to the post-effects.

Also, in either pedal mode, this is the case: the post-effects are always before the fx-loop.

When I create a loop. All effects including distortions (stomps) and the Delays and reverbs are recorded. I can then change the mode or preset and the loop played back through the amp is not affected by the NEW sound... only my guitar is.

That is how it IS working. And that is how it should. :)
