Tonight I plugged in headphones to my Mustang I for the first time. Everything was fine until I unplugged the phones and no longer got sound from the speaker. Headphones still work but not the speaker. Could I have somehow blown a fuse? I did a reset, but no change. Also updated the firmware. Still no sound from speaker. Any hope of resolving this without a trip to a service center? Thanks.

My guess is a faulty headphone jack. Is it under warranty? If so, I would take into the service center. (It should be an easy fix) If it is not under warranty and you are comfortable with these things, pull the chassis and inspect the jack. A replacement jack should be a couple bucks at Radio Shack.

If you are not comfortable working on electronics, take it a Fender service center or any competent amp repair shop.

***
Quick Addition: Check the spade terminals on the speaker. With the amp turned off, gently pull each spade terminal and then push them back on. If that does not work, see above. Good luck!

I agree that the problem is most likely associated with a malfunctioning headphone jack and that if the amp is still under warranty that you should seek authorized repair under that warranty.

However, your not going to find a replacement jack at Radio Shack. The part you need is a special switching jack and you can get a replacement by ordering part # J-355W-C-NT at the following link:

http://www.connect-tech-products.com/index1.php?subtype=3.5mm%20Panel%20Mount%20Jacks&id=2

Note that there is a PDF file available that shows the jacks specifications. In those specifications you'll find that the jack has a spring built into it and it could be the source of the malfunction.

So, if the amp is not under warranty, it might be prudent to spray a little contact cleaner in the jack and re-insert the plug several times to see if you can free things up before you go disassembling the amp.

Thanks guys! Since it was purchased in Nov. 2012, I'm assuming it's still under warranty. But I will try the contact spray first to see if that's enough to fix it.

No luck with the contact cleaner, so off to GC with receipt in hand.

Good news: Took the amp and my Nov. 2012 receipt to the local Fender Authorized Service Shop. The technician made a quick call to Fender, and they're sending me a new amp. Only downside is I have to wait 10 days for it to get here, but can't complain. He couldn't tell me if they'll be replacing my V. 1 with a V. 2., but I would have to assume they're don't have V. 1's lying around to satisfy 5-year warranty claims, do they? I do have a Mustang III V2, and I much prefer the selection and sound of the newer amp models, along with the new set of effects. I use the M I as my bedroom amp, with the M III in my studio, and would prefer that my presets match up in both amps. I guess my M I just had a defective headphone jack. Despite this little snafu, I still believe the Mustangs are amazing bang for the buck and for home studio use are hard to beat.

The warranty alone is hard to beat IMO. In another thread elsewhere here, the topic of Chinese made guitars is discussed and someone makes mention of paying more to have “Fender” on the headstock. Its examples like this and various posts I see from Rob Schwartz here making good for a customer is PRECISELY the reason I would most definitely pay the extra loot for that name on the headstock.

Good on you.

enjoy

You probably will get a V2 as the V1 is out of production.

The Fender warranty is incredible. They are very good about replacing warrantied items with the current models.

bummer, that's why I've never plugged headphones into my Mustang amp.

Makes me nervous about it too. I had the M I for 18 months and this was the first time I'd plugged phones in. Gotta assume it was just a bad jack. At least I know if it happens again they'll replace the amp. I'll be testing the jack first thing as soon as the new one arrives. I won't use phones often, but know there'll be times when I'll want to go quiet (when my lady is around, for example).

A nudge to Fender to consider upgrading the headphone and aux input jacks, even if it adds $5 to price of the amp.
