Using a Mustang 3 for Direct Recording - is this a good idea? What's the best way to do it? USB? Using the XLR outs into another interface? How is the latency?

Yes. It's a very convenient way to directly record a range of different sounds/effects.

USB is good as it's direct digital recording. For some people it seems to work like a dream, others have various set-up issues with drivers and DAW software. Using the analogue (XLR etc) outputs into another interface, whether that's an external USB interface or your PC's internal soundcard, seems to me only beneficial if it makes a difference to the latency. You'd have to try both on your own equipment to see if there is actually any difference. In all cases the latency is pretty low, but it depends I suppose what else you're trying to sync with the recorded sound.
