I did search and read through existing threads first, but I still would appreciate any help on this question. I'm brand new to this and want to make my first recording.

What I'd like to do: Record the sound from my Mustang III v2 amp, with all of the Mustang's effects captured in the recording.
Tools/equipment at my disposal:
- Mustang III v2
- Scarlett 2i2 audio interface

Is the right approach to use the FX Send (in Normal mode, not Looper mode) as line level input into my 2i2, and then record using something like Reaper capturing the 2i2's USB input? Or should I get an XLR to TRS cable and use my Mustang's line outs into my 2i2? Is there a difference?

Thanks for any help!

Maybe I'm missing something, but why not just use the amp's USB output directly to your computer? (The amp sends digital audio over USB, in case you didn't realise that)

I agree with Scottuk. You should try USB first. If you do need to use your Audio interface however, I would use the headphone out and split it into Left and Right and connect those to input 1 and 2 of your audio interface. IMO its best to record without Reverb and Delay. You can always add those, but you can't remove once they're baked into a track. Coming out the headphone out allows you to get the cab sims and maintain any stereo imaging you want.

Edit: forgot about the Line out on the Mustang III as I use a Mustang II. Same would apply to that provided the signal carried the cab sim and stero imaging. Upside is they are likey balanced audio.

Carry on

yes - using your Scarlett interface you would be going digital > analogue >digital . Two unneeded conversions.
But then again who knows if the line out is more perfect than the USB.

Me I like to record with all the fx as that has helped get the mood of the piece.
Could split it and record one channel as clean, one with fx - but life's too short really for that.

Yes indeed. Depending on what you are recording into, you can add reverb and delay on monitor side of the record track. So what is going in is dry but you hear it with verb and delay. Of course now we're getting into another topic. LOL

Hmm, good points about the 2i2 interface adding another DAD conversion step. I had read some posts about the Mustang USB not being great quality for recording (and recommending to mic your amp instead, which I don't want to do), so I was thinking my 2i2 would be better quality. I'll try recording straight from the Mustang into Reaper and compare.

For what it's worth, here's my first ever recording. Not first with the Mustang...I mean first ever in my life. I've been playing for 17 months and gave Ween's A Tear For Eddie a try. Note that there's no backing track mixed in yet, and I mangled a couple parts, and my timing's off, etc.! But I wanted to try putting something out there.

Here it is (fast forward to the 3:00 minute mark for where it picks up the pace a bit if you like):

EDIT: I created a different mix with a backing track I created using RiffStation.
