I have a Mustang IV v1 and a Mustang III v2. When I plug in my gt100 into the mustang 5, it works fine, but when I plug into the MIII, no matter how I plug, thru effects loop or direct, I get a very loud hissy noise, and nothing I do can get rid of it. Is there something very different with v1 and v2, where you cant use multiefx pedals???

Thanks in advance

There shouldn't be any difference between the V1 and V2 Mustang amps in this regard. Lots of people have reported (in this forum) successfully using external pedals with both v1 and v2 amps.

Three thoughts:

First, your Mustang 4 v1 has a stereo fx loop, compared to the mono loop on your Mustang 3 v2. Also the v2 amps have some additional sockets. How exactly are you connecting everything in both cases? Let's check for any differences in the way you're setting it all up.

Second, are you trying both amps with exactly the same cables? If you're using any different cables in the 'hissy' setup that you aren't using in the good-sounding setup, try swapping-out those cables.

Third, are you using the same guitar for both tests? (Perhaps an obvious question, but if you have two amps, maybe you have two guitars and use one with each amp!). If so, try swapping the guitars and see if the hiss stays with the amp or moves with the guitar.

NB you also mention a Mustang 5, but say you only have two amps, so I'm assuming that's a typo and that you have the two amps as above. If you also (or instead of one of the above) have a Mustang 5, please clarify so we're sure we're all talking about the same amps.

I have the IV Mustang with the Me-70 pedal. Working the clean channel it is very very clean and bright. No hissing at all. I use a 2012 American Strat. Hope you get that figured out

Don't forget that, once you upgrade the v2 operating system, you have two options/settings for the Efx loop. The wrong one will sound overdriven. My m3v2 is working like a dream through the Efx loop.

Ahhh, I think that is the problem, I get sounds very distorted, what has to be set, and Scott that was a type, I meant 4.

You want to go into the Util menu and change the FX loop from "Normal" to "Looper". By switching to "Looper" mode, you put the FX loop completely after the Mustang preamp so it can be used as a clean poweramp and nothing else.

See also this:

The PDF file linked in that article has a nice diagram showing the two fx-loop options.

Thanks for everyone's replies, I just needed to change looper mode, now works ok. But the gt100 seems to have a hiss problem, not present with guitar straight to amp, but thru gt100. I guess like the hiss associated with earlier mustangs.

You may have a ground loop. The Mustang is grounded, and if your gt100 is powered and grounded as well then you are going to hear some noise. You can search for "ground lift" on any of the online sites to see some choices. I happen to also need ABY functionality, so I use a Radial BigShot ABY which has an option to isolate and ground lift part of the circuit.

Check out the GT-100 manual:

On p22, rear panel diagram:

LIFT/GND switch
Normally, you can leave this set to the
GND position.
If you’ve connected the EXT LOOP
(SEND/RETURN) jacks to an amp, a
ground loop may occur, producing
noise. If this occurs, you may be able
to eliminate the noise by moving this
switch to the LIFT position.
