Most of us here in the forums have no delusions of becoming the next Slash, SRV, Eddie Van Halen or any other rock icon. We play a variety of styles and most of us cover songs or at least cover some songs in addition to creating original music. We are hobbyists and semi-pro musicians that want an affordable amp that can do everything and do everything really well. And we want it to do everything and everything well whether at concert or bedroom volumes.

NO tube amp can do that. Period.

EXACTLY!! There is simply no way to resolve this particular question because it always comes back to one group talking about the functionality of an amp that makes a performing musicians life better, and one group talking about a specific sound or tone they want to achieve.

It's been my personal experience that it's the younger musicians who still have dreams of becoming rock stars that cling most desperately to achieving "their" sound, while the one's who have done this for most of their lives (in my case more than 40 years) are more open to a simple and effective solution to a problem that's plagued us for most of our careers. And it makes sense when you think about it.

If you've been in this business for a while, you've most likely played a VERY wide range of material in various bands and settings. If your only real focus and expertise lies in one style of music, why wouldn't you simply opt for a tube amp and pedals? It's not like if you're primarily playing in a heavy metal band that your going to need a progressive jazz sound, or a delta blues sound, or a chicken pickin' Nashville sound...right?

Well that's what I'm talking about :) In my case in particular I found myself using presets that can all be done with my SuperSonic (ok and a wah, but had to buy the expression pedal for that anyway). I do have to use the volume pots a bit more now, to get from bluesy overdrive to hard rock overdrive (which I would have otherwise done by selecting a different preset), but that gets me where I want to get. I did use, occasionally, some other presets as well, but they were mostly just for fooling around. So for me, personally, there's no need to have a gazillion sounds when I'm only using a couple and can also get these from a tube amp which does them better.

I have no illusions I'll be the next Jimi Hendrix, lol, don't get me wrong :P But the signature tone is something that defines any band. If you can't define the tone, you can't really define the band. I am talking here about bands that do original stuff, not just cover bands - these do often need a variety of tones.
The tube replacement isn't something I'm looking forward either, but I'll manage it. The SS60, in particular, can get you that tube tone with a low enough volume through a trick with FX loop, but the burn channel comes very close to it anyway so there's no real need for that. Does it sound better when it's turned on a bit (if you don't attenuate the power via FX loop)? Of course it does. So do the Mustangs. By amp being turned up a bit, I mean the volume being increased to where the speakers can breathe - and no speaker can breathe at volume levels so low that a baby could be sleeping inside the room and wouldn't wake up

But like I said numerous times - if you're playing everything from jazz to heavy metal to polka to whatever - M is the best amp in that price range. To go a level better you'd have to invest in a hardcore MFX unit and a very good amp and it would cost you quite some more money.

yep, agreed. Nothing wrong with going the tube amp route. My idea setup would be the Mustang for small to medium gigs, and a tube amp for the bigger shows. My Boss stomp boxes sound great through both. 8)

When I play a clean passage in a song it is so clean it kind of makes you shudder a bit. You get that nice punchy bottom with a crisp mid and hi. Hard to describe. As for the Blackberry Smoke sound I use. It is through my ME-70 with distortion and a bit of compression. Those 2 12's cranked up just give it that nice punch. I'm really thinking selling the ME-70 and diving into the modeled sounds within the amp and the 4 button switch. JUst have to ween myself off of that pedal. My Strat and that amp were just made for each other. I was a Gibson Les Paul freak for a long, long time.

I could never settle for one tube amp... I go through phases where all I want to play is blues. But then I go through periods where I want to play metal power chords and get my inner KISS and Scorpions on! I need the modeling amp... and a nice Strat with Texas Specials and a Hellraiser with active EMGs!
