For those of you who explored the Ableton software that was included with your Mustang purchase;

Did you find the lite version enough to work with? Did you end up puchasing the full program? And, did you switch to some other product? If so, what product would you recommend?
I'm sorry if this has been covered. I'd like to jump in, but want to avoid dead-ends.
I just plugged my Mustang I into my laptop after one and one half years of ownership, so I'm a little slow on tech things. Looking for something long on visuals and short on study.

Thanks.

Looking this stuff up online. Had no idea how expensive it can be.... Prohibiitively. I mean, one could aquire new HARDware for these prices.
Please assume I know nothing of this matter, as this would be no stretch at all.

Thanks.

Good luck... I could never get Abelton to work easily. I just wanted to record myself, do some overdubbing, etc. Abelton was way too complicated. I consider myself fairly tech savvy. I have a Mustang I and III, and work easily with FUSE, buy not much experience with recording programs. Anyway I downloaded the Audacity freeware. I got it going right away and was able to record, overdub and do everything I wanted. It plays well with Mustangs and has easy intuitive controls, like a cassette player (opps showing my age there!)

I've not tried Ableton
I am tech savvy and have used lots of other audio software as an amateur.
Ableton is reputedly difficult to learn.

For quick grabs of sketch recording I use Audacity (free)
For multi track and full on edits I use Reaper.
The full version of Reaper can be tried for free - the trial period never runs out.
(Weird but true, they trust people to eventually purchase )
You can then buy Reaper for around $40

Reaper is excellent -
I got my my good friend who has the costly Logic Pro (on Mac) to use Reaper for a shared project. Now he prefers it - apart from a few things he can only do in Logic.

Yes, Reaper is the deal of the century and the best audio engine in the business. The price is now $60.00, but the license lasts for years with over a hundred free upgrades and what a great business model.

Thanks for your resposes.
I liked that there is a lot of support and tutorials for Audacity. But I will try it and Reaper. You have given high praise to Reaper, so, if it is true that one must be online to use it (or the trial), then, so what.

One question I forgot to ask: Do you use some sort of interface for these programs,
or do you record into the computer's microphone input, or both?

Thanks.

There is a huge free user manual and tons of free videos to get you up and running in Reaper.
(Rapid Environment for Audio Production, Engineering, and Recording)

You don't have to be online to use Reaper but you have to download it from the internet. You are free to use it and it is not crippled in anyway except after 30 days there is a pop up for about 10 seconds when you first start the program that lets you know that you have a trial version. The trial version is no different from the software program and comes with free upgrades. The developers trust that you will buy it eventually if you are using it and they are trying to be an example of a good business model.

I use a designated interface in a professional studio but using the computer's microphone input and speaker out should work fine as long as you don't need multiple ins and outs and if fidelity is not a big issue.

IMO Ableton Lite 9 is the deal of the century for being bundled with my Mustang. Yes, it was a PITA to get working, but once I had the Mustang talking to Ableton and Ableton talking to SoundCloud, this is a dream come true for me!

I previously used Audacity, which is really great for a shareware-type of software. Once you get Ableton functioning, it is so cool! I understand Audacity could go straight to USB, but I could never get it work. Hitherto, I mic'ed Audacity.

My issue is and always has been ambient noise. My house is noisy with pets and people coming and going, HVAC noise, phones and computers. By going straight USB into my Lenovo with Ableton this is nolonger any problem at all. My wife can watch TV, play YouTube or ask me questions while recording. It is simply not an issue.

With the number of tracks offered with the Lite version, and the fact I am not simply programming tunes from the keyboard, it is unlikely that I will every outgrow the Lite version.
