... In my opinion.

1: thicker back panel
The original one just 9mm, as volume increases, tends to resonate a lot. This steals energy from speaker and produces unwanted mid low freq emissions giving a "little box" effect.

2: since is closed back, some inner sound absorber material is needed
Reflected internal waves come back to speaker and interfere with its mid hi emission. Unpredctables but bad effects on overall voice

3: replace "special design" (means cheaper...) speaker, with a Celestion Eight-15. It has the same basket and paper cone but bigger magnet, no doped surround and maybe longer voice coil. This leads to a extended response in high and low registers both
Two speakers have similar character, this keeps the tones print, symply Celestion is better.

I put a 15mm panel, some layers of fitted carpet and acoustic foam and the celestion speaker.
The overall risult is very satisfactory, rising volume knob, the sound doesn't become annoyng as before, the better response of speaker is not affected by unwanted resonancies and no box effect at last.
Even the "so blamed" factory preset, become acceptables.

Apart speaker cost (30€), other tricks taken a couple of hours of work only.

In my opinion, Fender should put a thicker panel in factory and would a genuine Celestion so expensive to put inside?

I'd say the same for the M II !

maybe a 10 inch Celestion to keep cost down
and for me anyway, the essential LED controller from M III

I measured it up and the LED could fit the space:
knob size as on M II , no reverb control, but keep middle tone knob
(with LED you could just about do without the mid tone knob)

then add the 2 button footswitch from M III range and you have a much better proposition
(even if they had to limit preset count to 24 or 32 to differentiate from M III)

I guess MI and MII must share control panel to keep costs down
(oh well, in another galaxy..)

@merifon: did you try the MI open back while you were halfway through?

@markcc

yes, i tryed with open back and the result was good to avoid such "boxy sound" but i prefere closed back for little speakers, this helps to extend the low freq response and since apartment use, makes much easier the placement. With open back, walls reflection becomes critical.

And who would buy a Mustang I at twice the price?
Not only using a speaker that costs close to what's probably the total manufacturing costs of the current amp, but re-tooling, factory cell changes, engineering (that added thickness and sound absorbing material better not lead to an increased risk of fire, even in hot conditions, and the beefier speaker better not blow the back plate off), re-certifications (UL, TUV, you name it), and added support costs because there are now three Mustang Is to support - it all adds up.

besides my "just for fun" hobby work, my tips were suggestions only...

However i don't believe that a thicker MDF panel would change too much industrial processes and costs. This simple change itself would be a big improvement, even without "costly" absorber or new speaker.

+1 merifon

arth1: your attitude would get nothing changed, no new ideas invented
- Fender will revisit this line, or start a new line, at some point - that's in the nature of producing consumer goods - at that time they will consider what they've learnt from their enthusiastic purchasers.
But your glass of whisky or Southern Comfort looks good, can just get that good smell ..

it has been suggested several times by forum members that a 'Mustang PRO' line would be something to think about. It would cost more and you'd get more. What's not to like?

Now that would be a different thing altogether. For those who like modelling amps, I can see that being a good thing.
A busker's version with battery support and sturdier construction might also be sellable.

But due to the software issues, I think the line is on its last leg, and will be replaced with something new soon. Perhaps it will be better - time will tell!

Hi everybody, after some months i improved my touch a little bit... Ok, it doesn't matter 8)
Beside this, I finally had the chance to compare the modified mustang against an original Mi v1. With satisfaction, I have noticed a greater extent, especially in the bass, treble are also less annoying, especially when the volume rises. Even the backing tracks are less boxed and almost acceptable.
I consider the results very satisfactory, also in relation to the cost of the speaker.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think the point here is that all those mods you suggest can "easily" done yourself.

I originally wanted to do this kind of mods myself, then I bought an MIII and only use the MI in situation where the small differences the mods would make don't matter
