Is it possible to use the Zoom G5 with the Mustang 1 ver2 as an effects unit while turning off the amp simulator (Zoom G5)? I would like the ability to use the Super Sonic amp from the Mustang but use the simplicity of the Zoom G5 for stomp pedals. Then use reverb, chorus from the Mustang. Would this be ideal or having the reverb, delay, chorus coming from the Zoom and only use the Mustang for the amp? '

Since the Mustang 1 ver2 doesn't have an effects loop, I guess I would plug the guitar into the Zoom first and then output from the Zoom into the input on the Mustang?

Also, does anyone know how you can have up to 9 effects in a patch on the Zoom and only have 4 switches? Actually, 1 switch is for the pre-amp tube.

Thanks,

Frank

I would be inclined to use all effects from the G5 as long as it sounded good.
It just makes things simpler I think.

I don't know about the G5, but the G3 is able (after firmware update) to have 6 effects with only 3 switches.
It works because the buttons at the top (labeled program? i think) were reconfigured to act as "scroll" buttons.
Think of it as having more pedals to the left or right of the screens. use the scroll.
There is also a way to scroll with your feet by pushing two buttons together... hard to do tho.

But isn't it better to have the reverb, chorus, and delay after the amp (Fender Mustang) stage?

Meehh... Reverb possibly...
But old school rules dictate everything in front of the amp ;)

But really... It can be made sound good either way.
I don't own a combo so I don't really know how well it will take anything being put to the input.
I use the Floor.

The classic counter-example to that is tremolo. Put that before the amp, and you won't (depending on other settings) get a tremolo effect, you'll get a sound that oscillates between clean and distorted. So there are good reasons why some things work better before the (pre-)amp and others work better afterwards.

I think the OP's idea to use the Mustang for post-effects is good. However, I'd also question the need to use the G5 at all, just use the Mustang for pre-effects and amp-modelling, it really does do the whole thing very well. Unless of course the G5 has some very different sound that you can't get from the Mustang, in which case again the OP's idea to use that before the amp makes perfect sense.

I'm looking to be able to navigate to different patches as well as to turn off/on effects within a patch. Also, a wah and the ability to have a compressor and OD on at the same time is important to me. The Mustang 1 ver2 only has a one foot-switch and from what I understand is for clean/dirty or the opposite. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, are you saying that I can use the Mustang's amp modeling with the Zoom G5 in front of it? I really dig the Super Sonic (burn) model. So to get this is work properly, I assume I will plug the guitar into the Zoom G5 and then output from the Zoom G5 into the input on the Mustang with the Super Sonic (burn) amp on?

And, I would like to do the opposite by using the amp modeling from the Zoom G5 and make a "studio preamp" preset in the Mustang. Does Fuse allow you to make a preset like that to save to the amp? I don't care to have a laptop with me at all.

Is it possible to use the Mustang 1 foot-switch to go from a studio preamp preset to an amp preset like the Super Sonic?

Thanks,

Frank

Personally, I'd sell the Mustang I and the ZOOM G5 and use the money to get a Mustang III, which does have a lot more pedal options including an Expression Pedal for Wah.

Sorry I can't be more help than that, I just can't imagine trying to manage all those settings between the 2 units effectively. But there are lots of people who do it with great results - hopefully you can get it all worked out. :D

Yes,

I had a Boss GT6 Floor unit. Granted nowhere NEAR what the Zoom is capable of, but I was using that for the distortion/ODs and disabling all the amp modeling. Then I decided I was just getting too old to deal with programming two devices and sold the GT. In hindsight, I should have sold the GT first, and used the extra loot to get the MIII. I’m such a dope. I found that the GT was not transparent at all and just blanketed the beauty of the Mustang.

I'm not looking for such a hefty amplifier. Wife won't allow it. :) And I do not play out anymore. It's for home recording stuff. I'm using headphones most of the time anyway.

Right now, I see that the Zoom G5 has more flexibility with effects, but again the most important part right now is the ability to use a compressor and OD at the same time. Will Fender fix this? Who knows....Maybe this summer...

Can you suggest the right connections when using the Zoom G5 or comparable floorboard with the Mustang 1 ver2?

I remember my dad saying something similar so many years ago when I was in my teens. I rolled my eyes and said, "it does have a volume knob".

Hows the big muff on the Zoom? I’m a little disappointed with the one on the mustang. Not very present or up front (for lack of a better word) to my ears. Almost like I’m hearing it underwater or something. The other stomps sound fine to me, just the Big Fuzz.

I haven't purchased the Zoom G5 yet, sorry. I'm making sure I can use it properly with the Mustang.

Ah ok

Well that Zoom looks pretty awesome. Of course… you could always tell your wife they didn’t have the MI in stock or that the MIII IS the MI :D

Whatever you choose, enjoy!
