Hi everyone, it's just a few day since I had the chance to fiddle around with presets/FUSE editor on my Mustang I V.2 and I was just curious about how different presets would sound on a different Mustang model (different power/speaker size, from 8" to 12").

I created some heavy-metal presets and I recorded the amp direct output via USB cable and Audacity. Then I double tested the result listening to it via my home stereo system hooked up to my pc and ipod headphones: I noticed that there's no huge difference between the tone coming from the real speaker and the one from direct USB amp source (a little less bottom end on the latter) while using headphones everything sounds thin/gritty and much more different from the other ones (headphones quality is not so high so that may be the problem).

Did you ever download/try a preset on your amp and got a radically different result from the initial expectations?

Here's a link to a short clip I recorded using my DualRecto V1.0 preset and my Mustang I V2 directly to Audacity: http://tinyurl.com/pf8tvdj

I'm very curious to know how this preset would sound on other Mustang models, maybe someone who have models II, III.. could give it a try and share their experience.

Cheers,
Phil

We got the same amp model, and man I am loving that preset that you're using. I should try that when I get home!

I recorded this using Audacity as well.

Thanks Seryna, nice tone/chord sequence you got in your recording (very Radiohead-like).

In the meantime I listened again to the recording with some good headphones and I have to say that the result is pretty close to the real deal.

Still, I' wonder if someone has ever A/B tested the same preset on two different Mustang models and what the results are..

Cheers,
Phil

I listent to your mp3 with my headphones and sounds pretty good.

If youu use the same headphone you hear differences between the mustang headphones output and the usb recorded version? it should sound the same except for volumes issues.

I tried once more with a couple of Sennheisers and now the sound seem to be quite similar to the one coming "live" from the amp..

Still, the point I'm interested in is if presets change radically when played through different versions of the Mustang (who have different speaker size from mine, version I V.2).

I'm thinking about getting a pair of Mustang II/III for playing live with a stereo setup and still retain portability/ease of use with presets.. but first it would be interesting to know if I have to re-arrange all of my presets when switching to the new models..

at least on the case of the Mustang 3, output via USB/fx-send is similar to speaker response but not identical. I developed an EQ compensation to account for the difference

To get an uniform result this is what I do:
-finetune my preset using exclusively the speaker out
-record either via USB or fx-send into Audacity or similar
-apply a EQ correction to the recording (available as an effect on Audacity) with the following EQ settings or similar:

-100hz = 0db
-200hz = +5dB
-400hz = +3db
-800hz = +3db
-1,6khz = 0db
-3,2khz = -3db
-6,4khz = -5db

overall level gain = unity

I've had to tweek almost all of the presets I've downloaded from the Fuse libraries. For the most part they're very close to what I'm looking for, but I'm on a Mustang IV (ver 2) so I typically have to adjust the EQ a bit to compensate for the cabinet. It appears a lot of the presets may have been created on III's so the low end is considerably less than on my IV.

Thanks jedi2b, with that correction to the EQ the rendition of USB recording is surprisingly close to the actual tone coming out from the amp speaker!
