Hi all,

EDIT: SOLVED! You guys are great. I had the volume on the amp emulation around 7-8 thinking that with the gain down and the volume at that level I'd get that nice "tube feel." I turned the volume down to about 4-5 and turned up the Master and really didn't lose the "tube feel" like I thought.

In turn, both the headphones work great and I no longer get whooshing through my amp, as if I am overloading it. Thanks so much!

Loving this amp to death, but am having two issues that I need help understanding with my M3 v2.

1. Headphones:

I just bought Sony 7506 studio monitors for late night playing and noticed some popping when using them. Not sure if it is the emulated out or the headphones. I usually play on the Twin setting and have to get master around 3-5 to be decently audible. The gain is almost nothing. I have a few pedals engaged and noticed popping or crackling out of the headphones. This seems to happen when driving the amp. Is this a headphones issue or something internal to the amp? Are the pedals causing this? I don't see why, as it sounds fine through the normal speaker, so it leads me to believe it isn't affecting the digital modeling in any way.

2. Clipping/distortion in the effects loop

I use a lot of separate delays and reverbs in the effects loop (notably the Carbon Copy, Line 6 M9, and TC Hall of Fame) and notice that when engaging a chorused reverb I get a distorted whooshing sound when I dig into the guitar. This doesn't happen on the studio pre setting, but I don't understand why that would be the case since these modulations are in the effects loop, (set to both looper and regular it does this). Shouldn't the normal amp models also be unaffected since this goes into the solid state power amp and is not coloring the amp's inner digital modeling?

Thanks in advance!

Popping and crackling sounds to me like you might be overloading the headphones. it's just when you turn it up loud? Just a guess though, could be a few causes.

hmmmm not sure what to say about that..... my Boss stomp boxes seem fine in the effects loop.

regarding the effects loop, you are either overloading one of your excternal effects input or you are overloading the power amp on the mustang on the fx-return, or both.

try this in order:
-lower the level of the external pedals to a very low value (ideally unity gain, could be 1/10, 3/10 or 5/10 level depending on your effect manufacturer imagination) with the mustang you gain nothing putting a lot of signal as it is not a tube amp.
-lower the fx-send level: simply lower the volume knob (NOT the master volume) until the clipping/phasing dissapears

once you get clean sound, increase the master volume on the mustang to obatin the desired volume level.

regarding the crackling noises, with the phones connected, try wiggling the phones jack a bit (gently! it's fragile), if you get the noise by doing that the phones connector on the mustang is busted, if not your phones are most probably the source of the problem.

I don't own any of the pedals you listed but, after checking them out at Sweetwater, it appears that every one of the pedals you listed is designed to be used into the amp input (Guitar-->pedal-->amp input), not in an effects loop. The signal that comes out of an EFX send is not just like the one that comes out of your guitar. You should expect distortion or altered sound/response when a front-end stomp is used in an effects loop. It's not the optimal setup, and saturation and harsh response are the first clues. You should expect no better from a rack unit designed for an efx loop when used as a stomp. If it works, so much the better---playing the odds, I would bet against it.

Thanks all!

With the headphones, I think I am definitely overloading them - I have to turn it up to 3-5 to hear what I am playing, so I don't know how to avoid it. Tried wiggling the cable a bit in the socket and it didn't affect anything... I will likely look for some other headphones.

For the effects loop, I have messed around a bit and I know something is overloading, but it seems odd that it is okay on the Studio Pre and then goes crazy on other models. This isn't as big a concern as the headphones, so I will troubleshoot this a bit when I have more time.

Thanks again,
Matt

Get a headphone amp. Even a cheap C-Moy amp will do wonders.
If you want something really good, take $20 and go to a thrift/junk store. Chances are they'll have an old 70s or 80s pre-amp or combined amp, which you can use as the best headphone amp that money can buy.

The reason it works with the preamp, but it overloads with the amp-models is that all the other amp models have 10 times as much gain as the studio pre-amp!
this is a good indication taht you will solve your issue lowering the amp-emulation volume (volume knob on the amp)

Regarding the headphone issue, this may be the same problem as some of us are having with the Fender G-DEC amps.
http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=49605

On certain patches, there is a very unpleasant crackling noise through the headphones when you pick the strings hard. The headphone amp appears to be overloading on patches where the gain is set close to 10. When not using headphones, the sound from the speaker is fine.

So far the only suggestion from Fender is to lower the gain :?

Gain on the twin is at 2, not sure if I can go much lower...

Definitely an issue with a distortion box active via the amp but that seems crummy if that's the case too.

Can anyone chime in that has no issues across clean and dirty patches and what headphones you're using?
