Princeton on 3 or 4 and the amp is very clean and very clear especially with the Princeton Amp present. Almost too clear for most work but then you can always adjust the preset treble and mid tone controls accordingly.

yeah that model can go so clean, I figured if you couldn't find it there, it must be some other underlying problem. The Princeton model also works brilliantly with the EXP-1 expression pedal - choose to control the GAIN with the pedal and you can toe down for distorted leads and heel back to the clean sound. :D

For best tone with the Ibanez, I use heavy strings (13-56 flats)

I was doing that for a while. I also went with a wound 3rd (g) string. It massively improves tuning stability. And my favorite brand is still D'Addario - as far as I know they are still based in Farmingdale, NY.

Regarding hotter pickups and cleans in case one or two folks are interested.

I really missed using my Clean Princeton preset so played around with it last night and gave it a tweak to fit the hotter pickup.  Got it back to where I was loving it with the middle position and a happy ground with the SSL5 bridge.  Since installing the new bridge pickup, I found myself using the middle pickup a whole lot more for cleans, which in the past I never bothered with, and when I need that extra oomph, I can switch to the bridge.  I also had put in a mini toggle switch a while back to activate the neck pickup when using the Bridge position but with the full set of Custom Shop 69s, I never really saw the value of it so debated whether to remove it.  Well it certainly has a practical use now.  If I’m on the bridge position and want to add in some of the Fender Jangliness of the neck pickup to compliment the hot middy bridge, hey I can do that. It has a different tone than position 2, so that stays and I’ll recess the switch eventually.

To summarize, I now have a much more versatile strat and I'm back in business with the Princeton model.  I guess I could have just posted the summary LOL

Ya know captain...

I bought a Schecter Diamond Solo Elite about a month ago and it had active EMG 81/85 in it. I wasn't really wanting to go the active pup route but wanting a new guitar then & there (and it IS a nice guitar!) I decided to give it a go.

Got it home and after a few hours of playing through the week it I decided I liked it.

It had a really think neck profile which, I liked at the time. But found that ANY little movement changed the pitch of the strings. This... I didn't like.

So, I went back to GC and traded it back for an Epi LP Trad Pro. with passive push/pull pups.

This guitar... is much nicer, imo, than the Schecter. Not only do I not have the thin neck debacle, it even SOUNDS better than the Solo.
FWIW, the neck, though thicker, is actually faster for me to play on. There is something about the finish on it that makes it really smooth. Or, lack of finish?

Anyways, my point in all of this is that I was having a hard time when I first bought the Solo trying to find a totally clean sound. I did find it. And I also found that I had to roll the volume back sometimes even with some of the distortion settings.
In the final analysis, I just don't think I play the kind of music the Solo was intended for.
