First let me apologize if this is covered elsewhere. First day here, and I did search, but didn't find what I needed to know. For Christmas I was given a Fender Mustang IV and also a Line 6 - POD HD 500x. Both are really cool. Having a lot of fun. But when I use them together I'm having a hard time determining what sound I'm really getting (amp, pedal, or combo). Does anyone know of an easy way to bypass the modeling effects of the Mustang IV, in favor of the patches from the 500x? I would like to be able to pick and choose when I want to use the Fender sounds versus the pedal sounds. I hear there is a "4-cable" method to plug in the HD 500x, I'm just uncertain if that is really the way to do it, so I don't want to spend a ton of time figuring that out if it's not necessary. Thanks for any help y'all can offer.

the really easy way to bypass the amp emulation on the mustang would be to simply create a patch with the amp emulation set to "studio preamp" which is totally clean and transparent and you keep the tone stack on the mustang active.
then simply connect your multieffetcs to the instrument input.

as a more involved approach, you could connect it this way:
-guitar to multieffects instrument input
-multieffects output to mustnag instrument input
-mustang fx-send to musltieefects fx-return
-mustang fx-return to musltieefects fx-send

but if you go this way you will scratch your head every time you do anything to try to understand what you are doing, probably not worth the effort.

lastly, if you want to try to use your mustang as a powered speaker only, connect the multieffects output to the fx-return on the mustang and you are done, you will mute and bypass everything on the mustang this way and the mustang knobs will do nothing.

Good info jedi2b. Just transitioning to my BOSS ME-70 pedal and messed with the amp quite a bit before I made the amp preset, 92, basic '65 Fender Deluxe amp. That one jumped right out at me and that is the one I am going with. So many possibilities :P

Hey, jedi2b,

Hmm, everything else sounded good--but for this part, I'm thinking it should be:

guitar -> HD500X input
HD500X effects send -> Mustang input
Mustang effects send -> HD500X effects return
HD500X output -> Mustang effects return

The HD500X should let you bypass the effects loop, I think, so you'd just have to mind the Mustang's post loop processing if you want to isolate it completely on demand.

The way you described it, the signal leaving the HD500X's output (which should be its "final" signal) goes to the Mustang and back into the HD500X's effects return, which is... last before its (HD500X's) output?

Also, the Mustang's effects return is connected to the HD500X's effects send, which precedes (is earlier in the signal chain than) the HD500X's effects return, no? And, since the Mustang has a series effects loop, the signal entering its return is essentially what you'll hear.

Like so:

g -> HD in -> HD send -> M return -> pwr/spkr [this is what you'll hear through the Mustang's speaker, modulo any post loop effect and/or emulation]

and

HD out -> M in -> M send -> HD return (-> back to HD out, so feeding back around to the M in? Huh?)

Maybe I missed something, but not quite seeing it.

PITA

PITA, I think your idea makes more sense than mine :)

Frankly I just use the Mustang onboard effects only as it covers everything I need (heck, the amp emulation, the compressor, delay and reverb is more than enough for me :). The only external pedal I use is an EQ which goes to the mustang FX-send that I use as a line-out. The EQ is set in a way that the line-out signal sounds the same as what I hear from the mustang speaker.

I mean, if the really great guitar masters mainly use one or two pedals at the time, do we need a cascade of 10 effects? Sorry, that was an off-topic old-fart rambling :)

Thanks guys. Yeah I've probably got too much going on. I really need to find the sweet spot. Not that I HAVE to use both modeling processors, but knowing how to is helpful. I'll try your idea out PITA. Thanks again for the help.

To use the 4CM properly you will need to set up the HD's effects chain so that: (1) Only stomps that would normally go to an amp's input are routed to the HD's effects loop send (no amp or cab models here), and (2) the HD's effects loop return is routed between the HD's amp/cab models and post effects (i.e., bypassing the HD's amp/cab models). This will allow you to properly use your amp's front end with the HD's effects (both pre-stomps and post-mod/delays) when the effects loop is activated and exclusively use the HD's amp/cab/effects output when the effects loop is off.

Here's the "4 cables":
Guitar --> HD input
HD Efx send/out --> amp input
amp efx send --> HD Efx return/in
HD line out --> amp efx return

Thanks Paj,

That's a really good explanation. Appreciate the assist.

No problem. I'm REALLY happy with the way my Mustang IIIv2 is handling my modeler via the 4CM. I hope you get similar results with the HDx-M4 combination. I should mention that there are two Efx loop options once you update your Mustang via USB. "Normal" is the one you'll likely need for live use with the 4CM.

PajFender - what are your settings on the 500x? I'm about to do the same thing and am excited about the possibilities. Just curious if you have any pointers on this set up

Glorioso:

I'm not using a POD with my m3v2. I do have an XT-Live but I haven't tried it with my Mustang. The XTL gave me years of reliable service and doesn't owe me a thing.
