So i've had my mustang i for about a year now, and it's great and all. It does the job well. I was wondering if any sort of distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedals would work well with it (with the amp preset to a clean channel of course). And if they do, what pedals would work well with it? Also, would a wah pedal work as well?

I use a Joyo Ultimate Drive and a Rat 2 and LOVE it.

haven't had much luck with Fuzz pedals though.

mostly use 65 Deluxe model with the pedals.

I have an Ultimate drive and an Ibanez Wah - both work well, exactly as a normal amp providing you don't overload into digital clipping

How about boosting the preset drive channels? (ie for soloing) Does that work at all?

The way I currently have my setup (Mustang II v2) is one preset on the footswitch set up for a clean 65 Deluxe that I can push harder with the Ultimate drive which is set to low to moderate gain. I have the second footswitch preset for the 65 Deluxe with the Greenbox (Tubescreamer) stomp and with that i can also push it hard for say leads with the Ultimate drive as well. Or if i want more distortion for a lead i can use the RAT with or without the Joyo. Works well for me. I have a muff clone but find it to be a bit boomy and hard to control. Fuzz Face mini was really cool but the lack of tone control forced me to have to adjust presets specifically for use with that so it wasn't very practical. Still looking for a good fuzz face solution with this amp. One day i hope to get a lunar module.

I also have the MOD and DLY/RVB knobs preset with the FX i mostly use with Reverbs and delays tweaked to my liking. Drastically reduces the need for computer hookup to Fuse

Dirt boxes work fine with these amps. I use a III, but it;s the same modelling.

I've had good luck using a distortion or drive with a dirty amp model as well as a clean one. It likely won't do the same exact thing as with a tube preamp, but it does sound good.

My default 00 preset is a semi dirty Bassman, with the 2x12C cab, and some 65 F reverb. I say semi, because it depends on which pickups are being used- 'buckers push it harder, and make it sound crunchier. Currently, in front of the amp, my chain looks like this:

guitar > OCD> MXR '78 Distortion > main input. I tend to use them separately, to give me three different base sounds. Neither is set too extreme- OCD at unity, and 10-11 O'clock on the drive; '78 at 11-12 vol, and 11:30- 12:30 on the dist. ( I adjust for sc's vs hb's) crunch switch on. Stacked, things just get sick, lol!

The '78 hits the amp almost like a solo boost. Surprisingly little dirt for where the gain is set, but it jumps the volume up, adds some extra mids and drive, and makes whatever guitar I'm playing sound huge! Through my 01 '65 Twin preset, the above is even more true, and it adds chime out the wazoo. Apparently that model has more "headroom". I LOVE this pedal! ( the Classic Dist/ Prime Dist also both act that same way- more like a hot rodded od than like a distortion)

The OCD is set for a light- med crunch. Thru the already dirty bassman, it gives you a nice hot blues /rock crunch. With the clean Twin, it's more of a light crunch.

You'll have to experiment some yourself. The digital preamp will only handle so much input level before a limiter kicks in. I've found that with THIS pedal, set This way, it;ll handle it. Push it too much higher, and the amp doesn't like it. As a rule, unity gain, or a little higher is perfectly fine.

Look for a pedal with plenty of gain/ dirt of it's own- you'll get a lot more use and better results. Low gain od's like TS-9's are best used to punch a tube pre-amp over the edge. Pedals like Blues Drivers, OCD's, and Plim Soul's have lots of their own distortion on tap, and work well with clean amps, or to simply add a layer of dirt to any amp.

I've had mixed results with my fuzz. It's a Way Huge Swollen Pickle. ( Big Muff family, supposedly) Sometimes it sounds better than others, but I suspect operator failure plays a role in that... Into the front of my all solid state MarkBass amp, it sounds awesome, so go figure.
